A LUXURY MATCH IN THE HEART OF HARROGATE - GEORGE SMITH AND COCOONU
An exciting new retail development is flourishing in central Harrogate, bringing together two like minded Companies who specialise in the luxury marketplace.
Nestled at the bottom of Parliament Street, George Smith has become synonymous with beautiful, exquisite furniture of outstanding quality. They have UK showrooms in Newcastle, London, Harrogate and internationally, including New York and Los Angeles. Each piece whether sofas, chairs, chaises or stools are all lovingly made at their workshops in the North of England, constructed with the finest craftsmanship and using the very best natural materials.
George Smith was one of the Regency’s most celebrated furniture designers with an eclectic style ranging from neo-classic to Gothic. He was also the Prince Regent’s ‘upholsterer extraordinary’ and today still has a strong influence on the furniture make and design of this exceptional company. Experienced tailors ensure perfect pattern matching for beautiful upholstery and traditional skills are handed down through generations of English craftsmen. Equally, the company is consistently aware of market demands and offer contemporary designs as well as timeless pieces which transcend changing fashions. In addition to their extensive range, a bespoke service is available. As each piece is hand built from the frame up, George Smith can offer bespoke customisation and intricate detailing for an individual look that aligns perfectly with clients’ lives and homes. Equally, the company works on large high end commercial projects worldwide - specialising in bespoke designs tailored to the luxury leisure market.
CocoonU began retailing ethical cashmere clothing and accessories sourced from and inspired by Outer Mongolia and its' people. Over the last four years the Company has been developed by Managing Director and Founder, Vanessa Streeton, driven by a passion to retail sustainable, unique products of the highest quality that can be purchased with a clear conscience. The Company has had an online presence since it began and in November 2009 opened a Boutique in Harrogate's Montpellier Quarter.
A hidden gem that gained a strong word of mouth following both in Yorkshire and across the UK, the Boutique flourished. CocoonU Collections now include an organic bath and body range hand made in the UK, an Italian leather hand finished handbag and luggage collection incorporating, natural tanning processes and vegetable dyes and a hand made jewellery collection. The handbag and jewellery ranges are made by Yorkshire designers and the boutique has regularly featured small collections from other local designers. A recent collaboration with Nidderdale based designer Susan Gaunt, has led to interiors projects representative of a shared ethical ethos and a deepening interest at CocoonU in helping lift awareness of the quality, heritage and innovation of Yorkshires fabric mills and more broadly supporting British designers and manufacturers.
Vanessa first met Ben Norris of George Smith just over two years ago and a strong mutual respect for each other's products and ethos led to a growing working relationship. George Smith furniture was featured in the Montpellier Boutique and CocoonU cashmere and organics at George Smith in Harrogate and London. Literally bursting at the seams in Montpellier Mews, Vanessa was hunting for larger premises when she met up with Ben for a business meeting. The result was the next step in this synergistic business relationship - moving in together!
Launched in May 2011, the dynamic fusion of these two businesses in Harrogate brings a phenomenal new retail experience to the North of England - a lifestyle store embracing the finest luxury items for the home and individual, all designed and produced with skill, knowledge, passion and principles.

GARDEN POEMS OF THE YEAR ANNOUNCED
A Welsh poem entitled ‘Charlie’s Beans’ has been named the country’s best garden poem by Gardeners’ World magazine, ahead of nearly 1,000 entries, following an eight month competition. An expert panel including broadcaster Alan Titchmarsh, award winning poet Roger McGough, poet Matt Harvey and poetry producer Sarah Langan named the poem by Tony Scarfi from Newport, Garden Poem of the Year. Titchmarsh described the poem as “rich in observation about both plants and people”. Sarah Langan praised its “elegance and pathos.”
Second place went to another Welsh poet, Anna Wigley from Cardiff for a poem called ‘Ground’, while third place was a poem called ‘Compost Heap’ by Peter Wallis from Norwich. The judges were looking for poems that ‘surprised, touched and delighted them.’ According to McGough: “Gardeners make good poets. It must be all that time spent mulling and mulching. And the rich loam of language at their green fingertips. For me, the most successful poems produced an almost synaesthetic feeling, in which a unique, sometimes unsettling world was portrayed.”
Alan Titchmarsh will read out the winning poem at Gardeners’ World Live (15-19 June) in the NEC Birmingham. The three top placed poems will also be read out on Poetry Please on BBC Radio 4 this Sunday 5 June at 4.30pm. The poem ‘Charlie’s Beans’ by Scarfi included the verse:
“So, when I passed today and saw his patch
All pocked with tufts of couch and horse-tail
It hurt; and straightaway I thought of
his saved beans
High on a shelf in his pantry,
Chill, blotched, dormant in a rusty cocoa tin –
Tight, silent and unchanging,
Just like his grief.”
The winners are listed in June’s Gardeners’ World magazine, on sale now.

COOKING THE BOOKS AT BARTS
This month we are going poetic and gourmet at The Barts Hendrick’s Book Club as we proudly announce a talk given by renowned food writer, William Sitwell on Wednesday 8th June. As the long-standing and award-winning editor of Waitrose Kitchen magazine – formerly Waitrose Food Illustrated - he’s also a writer and TV presenter.

The books and poetry of Edith, Osbert and Sacheverell Sitwell are a key feature in the annals of British cultural history. Now currently writing his own first book, A History of Food, William will also be taking questions on how to break into food writing. The person with the best question will win a £20 Waterstones Book Voucher and a pot of Hendrick’s Gin Chelsea Rose tea served in a teapot.
Book clubbers can then enjoy high brow, academic discussions with their fellow bookworms or alternatively put their reading material to one side and enjoy cocktails and dissipation in the style of the original book club, The Bloomsbury Set. Please do let us know if you'd like to attend.

ESCAPE TO A FRENCH PARADISE
The urge to get away from it all has probably existed ever since people had somewhere to get away from. But it doesn't mean much, and can indeed be counterproductive, if you don't escape to the right destination and environment.
And this fact above all else lies at the heart of the La Calandre experience. Set in the glorious Provencal region - an area that enjoys more annual sunshine than the Cote d'Azur - it is surrounded by vines and is the perfect setting for energising, relaxing, informative and entertaining breaks.
Dating back to the 17th century, the former silk farm hosts house party gatherings, culinary, cultural and fitness and vitality events throughout the year. The venue provides absolute privacy for up to 12 guests, whilst laying on the best boutique hotel facilities and standards. The blend of rustic and contemporary is designed to rejuvenate and inspire mind, body and soul.
Boasting spacious dining areas inside and out and a superb swimming pool, perhaps the stand-out feature is the amazing courtyard complete with east and west side cloisters - one with a Summer kitchen dining area, the other with a Summer salon. And on warm nights the courtyard transforms into a cinema with films projected under the stars onto the huge entrance gate.
Former multiple Fitness Champion, Adventure Athlete and internationally renowned trainer Joey Bull (www.joeybull.com) will be running a number of Fitness & Wellbeing Breaks throughout the year. These retreats are designed to make the best use of the stunning environment, whilst providing uplifting and stimulating workouts as well as all important rest, fine food and a wine or two as well!
Owner and Manager Christine Harvey commented, “Joey has a great reputation for being a very special trainer and we want our guests to benefit mentally and physically from the best in an environment perfectly attuned to relaxation, restoration and re-invigoration. But for those less inclined to physical activity we provide much else and ensure our guests get exactly what they need from a La Calandre holiday.”
