MARY PORTAS, GRAZIA AND WESTFIELD LONDON ‘LIVING AND GIVING SHOP’ UPDATE-IT HAS BEEN AN UNPRECEDENTED SUCCESS!

2 months ago, a pop-up charity shop in Westfield London was not on anyone's radar. 3 weeks ago, with Mary Portas, Grazia and Westfield London, Save the Children retail team opened the world's first shopping centre charity shop – Mary’s ‘Living and Giving shop’.

The ambition was to raise £50,000 in 3 weeks, however with the last count today being £113,000. 400 volunteers have been involved, some from the charities – Save the Children, Mind & Trees for Cities and others from Mary’s retail consultancy Yellowdoor, Grazia magazine and Westfield London. We've had stock from Oasis to Vivienne Westwood, from Mulberry to Doc Marten, and everything in between. Customers have literally poured through our doors with every single one of them leaving with a smile on their face. This has been a chance to buy an individual one-off item, to buy it at a good price, to support a charity that saves children's lives and to have a great shopping experience. The energy and buzz that the shop created feels quite unprecedented.

Celebrities have also flocked to the shop, some of which even leant a hand! Tara Palmer Tomkinson, Meg Matthews and Lauren Laverne to name a few.

Nearly 10 million children die under the age of five each year - mostly from diseases like malaria, measles and diarrhea - things the world knows how to prevent and treat. Save the Children knows that simple solutions save lives - items like rehydration salts, vaccinations and a mosquito net which don't cost very much money can stop a child dying. Just £5 will save a child's life. By raising £100,000 that means that 20,000 children's lives have been saved. That's the equivalent of 100 primary schools full of children who will now stay alive.

£70 could buy a first aid kit for a clinic in a poor community around the world. Many health centres are poorly equipped which means parents and children go without vital care that can help them survive. A clinic kit includes small but life saving items like bandages, dressings, thermal blankets, thermometers, cotton wool, sterile gloves, elastosplast, antiseptic creams and emergency glucose sachets.

£70 could provide a food basket for a malnourished family in one of the poorest parts of Africa, helping to feed them for 19 days.

£125 will give a poor child in China a meal a day for a year at primary school, helping to prevent that child suffering from malnutrition, a common problem.

or £125 provides 50 children in Angola with life-saving malaria treatment

Every year 2 million babies die on their first day of life. £125 could provide a life-saving warmer for a neo-natal unit in Pakistan - helping newborn babies to regulate their temperatures and survive those first hours of life.

Jasmine Whitbread, CEO Save the Children said, ‘This has to be a record. I am so overwhelmed by the success of Mary’s Living and Giving Shop for Save the Children at Westfield London. £100,000 is an unbelievable sum of money far more than we dreamed. Everyone involved has been amazing, designers who have donated clothes, people who have volunteered and of course the public who have shopped till they drop! Mary and her team have been incredible.’

Whitbread continues, 'Save the Children staff across the globe are working flat out to stop the 10 million children who die under the age of five each year - with this money we can save thousands of children's lives and give them the start in life that every child deserves. Saving a child's life can cost as little as £5 - so every T-shirt, handbag or designer dress bought has stopped children from dying. I hope the public will keep donating wonderful things to our Save the Children shops across the country so we can keep saving children's lives.’

OXFAM LAUNCHES THE UK’S FIRST NATIONWIDE BOOK FESTIVAL

Oxfam this week launch the first annual Oxfam Bookfest – the first nationwide book festival, running from 4 to 18 July in hundreds of venues.

The festival aims to fight poverty through a love of reading by asking readers to donate to and buy from Oxfam shops, and come along to one of the hundreds of Bookfest events. The average selling price for one book is £1.60. Twelve books would be enough to buy a emergency hygiene kit, while just four books could provide clean water for a family.

More than 280 book-related events will take place in bookshops and other venues around the country throughout the fortnight, featuring well-known authors from all over the UK. The events take in everything from author readings and poetry competitions to quizzes, auctions and even ghost walks, in venues from local Oxfam bookshops to the Queen Elizabeth Hall in London.

Oxfam is Europe’s biggest high street retailer of second-hand books, and the third-biggest bookseller in the UK.
The charity sells £1.6 million of books per month – enough to buy 50,000 emergency shelters, safe water for 2.1 million people, or 64,000 goats.
Oxfam has more than 130 specialist bookshops and sells books in nearly all of its 700 shops.

Actor Bill Nighy said: “Oxfam Bookfest is such a wonderful idea. As a book lover and a long-term Oxfam supporter, I am so pleased to support the initiative - it will give everyone a chance to find a bargain and raise lots of money at the same time. I’d encourage everyone to get down to their local Oxfam bookshop, find out about their local Bookfest event or even donate any unwanted books they have. I’ll definitely be hunting for my own bargains during the fortnight.”

Author Phillip Pullman , who will volunteer in the Oxford bookshop on 4 July, said:
“As someone who’s shopped in Oxfam bookshops and supported Oxfam’s work for years, I was delighted to hear about Bookfest, which is a brilliant idea. It will give book lovers all over the country the chance to indulge their deepest passion while helping to change lives for the better.”

Four volumes of short stories called Ox-Tales , featuring 38 of the UK’s top authors, will be published in July to raise money for Oxfam’s work around the world. Available in bookstores from 4 July and published by Profile Books, they feature original stories from writers including John Le Carré, Alexander McCall Smith, Joanna Trollope, Ian Rankin, Mark Haddon, Helen Fielding, Jonathan Coe, Rose Tremain, DBC Pierre, Sebastian Faulks and Kate Atkinson.

Authors who will be appearing in their local Oxfam bookshop during Bookfest include:
• Esther Freud: Highgate, London (8 July)
• Jonathan Coe & William Sutcliffe: Bloomsbury Street, London (9 July)
• Hanif Kureishi: Portobello Road, London (10 July)
• Nicholas Shakespeare: St Giles, Oxford (11 July)
• Kamila Shamsie: Bloomsbury Street, London (16 July)

David McCullough, Oxfam’s director of trading, said:
“Book sales have been helping us in our fight against poverty for more than fifty years, as we’ve sold everything from the first ever Sherlock Holmes story to the latest Harry Potter novel. During Bookfest, we want people to donate to and buy from our bookshops so they can really see the impact that buying a book from Oxfam can have on the lives of poor people around the world.”

Author Joanna Trollope, who contributes a story to the Ox-Tales books, said:
"I have an Oxfam shop close by and I am constantly impressed by the appeal of the windows, the rapid turnover of stock, and the staff are all charming too. It is such a good way to buy books, which are, after all, for sharing. Why would we writers write them, after all, if it weren't to communicate?"

This year, for the first time, Oxfam also teamed up with the Hay Festival for its biggest ever charity partnership. The Oxfam prize at Hay was awarded to travel essayist Jan Morris, who was chosen by her peers at the festival itself. The Hay Oxfam Emerging Writers Prize was presented to Fflur Dafydd for her first book Twenty Thousand Saints . The Hay Festival is also working with festivals across the country, from Edinburgh to Brighton, staging 35 high-profile author events during July for Oxfam Bookfest.

CHARLES JOUFFRE REDECORATES SUITES AT LE MEURICE
The original Parisian palace hotel for almost 200 years; Le Meurice, one of the Dorchester Collection, shares its history with the history of France and evokes the ultimate in cultural Paris and Parisians. While France has made its ‘art de vivre’ one of the ultimate expressions of its culture, Le Meurice has elevated it to the rank of a fine art.

Because of the importance of “at home” feeling for guests, Le Meurice, wanted to use a Parisian interiors artist as opposed to a “hotel design” company. So Charles Jouffre – famous for creating the sumptuous drapes and hangings of the Grand Foyer at the Opera Garnier – was asked to design a brand new atmosphere for Le Meurice’s guestrooms. It was agreed that the hotel’s rooms were to take on the air of an elegant 18th Century home, where past and present meet with contemporary glamour. Using 17th Century techniques as part of a contemporary and noble philosophy, he set out to reinterpret the very spirit of Le Meurice, to create the ultimate Parisian home - a style envied all around the world.

Working closely with Sandrine Chollet, Jouffre has used re-worked period furniture using a palette of light colours interjected with bright tones and a contemporary, couture approach to create a welcoming and relaxing environment for visitors to Le Meurice, where each room is unique. An artisan since the age of 16, Charles Jouffre is one of the most important names in interiors today and has created curtains and upholstery for Philippe Starck and Jacques Garcia. In 1987 he opened his own atelier and is a founding member of L’Association de Prestige et Tradition.
Ornaments from around the world, and from the General Manager’s private collection, have been put in each room to complement the style and furniture, in order to evoke a feel of old Paris.
Ideally located opposite the Tuileries Gardens and only steps away from Place de la Concorde and the Muse?e du Louvre, Le Meurice is the most Versaillaise of Parisian places since 1835. Chef Yannick Alle?no oversees the entire culinary operation of hotel and has created an exceptional, three-Michelin-starred dining experience at the Meurice restaurant.

EIGHT MOORGATE EC2

This July will see the arrival of a truly unique new members club to East London. Eight Moorgate EC2 will be a rooftop club with a 360 degree panoramic view over London’s skyline. Set out over two floors and encompassing over 9000 sq.ft the club will offer two expansive terraces to enjoy the stunning views over the city. Conveniently located minutes from Liverpool Street and stylish Shoreditch, Eight Moorgate will offer a restaurant, members bar and lounge, library, exterior smoking lounge and even an on-site bespoke tailor.

Eight Moorgate will be the sister club of Eight Bank EC3 which property developer Brandon Kinsman opened in the heart of the City three years ago. Brandon previously worked in the hospitality industry for 20 years and has created a winning formula with Eight, attracting a loyal following of members who flock to the plush and expansive member’s lounge, with its pewter bar, wine wall and Brunswick pool tables. Dark leathers, woods and fabrics lend the club a sophisticated and very intimate air, making it the ideal place for meetings in one of the six private rooms, or screenings and presentations in the 20-seat private cinema.

Whereas Eight Bank is located underneath Change Alley, offering a secret haven from the busy City of London, Eight Moorgate will tower above the surrounding streets, and will be accessed through a glass lift located behind a discreet entrance in Dysart Street. Guests will enter on the Fifth Floor and be instantly impressed by the scale of the sweeping terraces surrounding both floors of the club. Members will lounge above the city skyline, enjoying barbeques, spit roasts and live jazz in this unparalleled al fresco spot for summer. There will also be a cigar lounge outside for smokers, where members will be able to enjoy cigar evenings coupled with whisky tastings.

The club’s 90-cover dining room is also located on the Fifth Floor set against a backdrop of steeples and skyscrapers. Head Chef Richard Lyndon has worked with Michelin starred Chef Jerome Basbancon and acclaimed Australian Chef Bill Granger. Richard has created an all day dining menu serving international cuisine ranging from classics to more contemporary dishes.

Pastry Chef Vanessa Antoli has previously worked for Tom Aikens and The Berkeley Hotel and has created an irresistible dessert menu. There are also two private dining areas, one inside catering up to 16 and also a private chef’s table for a further 16 located on the Fifth Floor dining terrace offering a view straight into the heart of the kitchen. Richard has also created an all-day menu served in the upstairs lounge.

The Sixth Floor will be home to the members’ lounge and bar, the library and private meeting room. This level will boast a seven metre pewter bar, three fireplaces and bespoke oak cases for members to store their own personal spirit bottles in. Head Barman Gian Luca Scanu (previously of Rocket, Deep and Opium) has created a diverse and sophisticated drinks list. The library’s wood panelled walls and roaring fire will offer a serene setting for members to work or relax in, and a unique and interesting service offered to members will be on site tailoring by one of Savile Row’s most respected names, Boland and Banks.

The interior, as well as the signature pieces of furniture of Eight Moorgate, has been designed by Brandon Kinsman and will be a synthesis of the cutting edge with the classic. The club’s two floors have been newly built on top of the existing building and have been constructed entirely from glass and steel. The club will offer wireless internet throughout and other new technology, lending a truly modern feel to the space. The furnishings however, with will offer flamboyant touches harking back to the 1920s, with design features including porcelain chandeliers, spitfire propeller fans and velvet chaises. Woods, leather and muted colours will all work to create a warm and comfortable space that is as inviting as it is state of the art. It is also the first venue to use entirely carbon neutral lighting throughout.

Existing members of Eight Bank will automatically receive membership to its sister club with no further cost to them and new members will also be allowed to use both clubs. Giving members two totally diverse offerings for the price of one membership is an exceptional selling point to Eight, and also reflects their commitment to offering value for money in this current economic climate. Membership will be extremely reasonably priced and will also be payable in monthly direct debits, rather than an annual. Members will also benefit from a complimentary subscription to the luxury Mr and Mrs Smith Silversmith Travel Concierge Service, complimentary club hire, and regular private member’s events.

Operations Director Alexandre Santamaria will oversee the entire operation. Trained in Paris, Alexandre most recently worked as Operations Manager for D&D London at their Royal Exchange Site and prior to that managed the Hoxton Grille in East London.Alexandre is assisted by General Manager Anthony Killip, who launched Eight Bank in 2006 and has worked at a host of luxurious restaurants bars and member’s clubs over the last 15 years. Brandon Kinsman says of the project:

“We are delighted to be expanding the Eight Club brand in this vibrant and exciting area and look forward to welcoming an eclectic crowd from all walks of life.”

HARRIS TWEED HEBRIDES IS SCOTLAND'S TEXTILE BRAND OF THE YEAR

Harris Tweed Hebrides has won recognition from fashion leaders for the style and quality of its famous fabric. The Company, based on the Isle of Lewis, has been named Textile Brand of the Year at the 2009 Scottish Fashion Awards.

The sought-after prize, presented at a red-carpet event at historic Stirling Castle in Scotland, is a significant milestone, underling the Company’s work with a new generation of edgy designers. HTH employs more than 40 people at the Shawbost mill and now accounts for more than 90 per cent of Harris Tweed production.

Founded only 18 months ago, it produced its first tweed in June 2008. Harris Tweed Hebrides overcame competition from long-established companies on the short list including Johnstons of Elgin, Hawick Cashmere and Pringle of Scotland to win the award, which was accepted by the Chairman of Harris Tweed Hebrides and former UK Trade Minister, Brian Wilson, and the Company's Creative Director, Mark Hogarth. Mr Wilson said: "This is fantastic recognition for everything that has been achieved at Shawbost over the past 18 months. We were delighted just to be bracketed alongside great companies like Johnstons of Elgin and Hawick Cashmere anyway, but to win the award was totally unexpected."

He said that the generic Harris Tweed brand remained "incredibly strong around the world" and that Harris Tweed Hebrides had tried to add value to the brand through collaborations with cutting-edge designers in the fashion, interiors and accessories sectors. Mr Wilson said: “Clearly the business climate in Britain and elsewhere has been challenging for everyone in the past 18 months, so the Company has remained focused on doing what we do best – producing cloth of exceptional quality and style that reflects a venerable tradition dating back centuries. We want to tell the world that Harris Tweed is still very much alive and doing interesting things.”

A ‘JAMILTONS’ BIG PICNIC CHRISTINE AND NEIL GET STICKY WITH STRAWBERRY JAM FOR A MACMILLAN MAKEOVER
Macmillan Cancer Support is proud to announce a new ingredient to its Big Picnic (14 June to 17 July) this year – The Jamilton’s Strawberry Jam, available exclusively at Somerfield. Perfect for any summer picnic, all profits from the sales of Neil and Christine's jam (approx £1.30 per jar) will go directly to the charity to help improve the lives of people affected by cancer.

Christine Hamilton says, "We are so excited that we have been able to do something positive and fun with one of our favourite charities. Macmillan has such an important job to do, providing support to everyone affected by cancer. We hope that by getting involved we will help them raise even more money through their Big Picnic.”

Christine continues, “Let’s all indulge in Jam Today and Jam Tomorrow so these jars fly off the shelves to raise thousands of pounds for people affected by cancer. I don’t want any left or Neil will have a perfect excuse to tuck in with scones and clotted cream!”

Picnics will be held all across the UK this summer to raise money for Macmillan. Pete Williams Head of PR and Charity at Somerfield says: "Everyone at Somerfield is very excited about the ‘Jamiltons’. We hope it will help to raise even more money for Macmillan as well as encouraging people to get their picnic mats out and join the Big Picnic, an event close to the hearts of Somerfield staff and customers."

To get involved in the Big Picnic all you have to do is pick a date between 14 June and 17July, get friends, family or colleagues together, choose a location, (whether it be in your garden, in the park, at school or at work), ask for a donation from each guest. What could be simpler? Visit www.macmillan.org.uk/bigpicnic to register your picnic, download posters and get fundraising ideas.

Somerfield’s staff and customers voted Macmillan as their charity partner in 2007. Since then they have raised over £2.4 million through their Better Together campaign, which seeks to support Macmillan in their ambition to reach local communities and improve the lives of everyone affected by cancer by 2010.
