THOUSANDS OF TODDLERS STEP OUT FOR BARNARDO’S
Thousands of mums, dads and tots across the country are gearing up to take part in Barnardo’s Big Toddle, the UK’s number one fundraising event for under-fives that last year saw more than half a million Toddlers taking part.

Registrations for the official launch event on May 10th have rocketed sky high, with hundreds of Toddlers expected to turn up to the safari-themed short sponsored walk held in Battersea Park Children’s Zoo.

Actress and celebrity mum Natalie Cassidy will be kick starting the Big Toddle summer events with baby daughter Eliza. Natalie says:

“This year’s Barnardo’s Big Toddle is set to be the wildest, brightest and biggest yet with children encouraged to dress up as their favourite safari animals. Eliza has already got her outfit sorted but has made me promise to keep it a surprise!”

Singer of R&B band Damage Jade Jones also hopes to Toddle this year with three-year-old son Beau. Jade says:

“As a dad myself, I know kids love the whole Toddle experience – getting sponsored by family and friends, doing the walk in fancy dress, getting a medal at the end... It’s a brilliant event and a great way to teach youngsters that there are other children out there who need our help.”

Funds raised at Barnardo's Big Toddle will support vital services provided by the UK’s largest children’s charity. These include projects for children with physical and learning disabilities, autism and behavioural problems.

Here are a few simple ways that parents can get their pre-schoolers Toddling:
• Encourage your local pre-school, playgroup or nursery to host a Big Toddle event
• Take part in a Barnardo’s organised event – these take place across the UK throughout the summer months. You can find your local event by looking here: http://www.barnardos.org.uk/bigtoddle/big_toddle_info_for_event/big_toddle_joining_event.htm
• Host your own Toddle with friends and family - at a park or even in the back garden! For more information on how to do this click here: http://www.barnardos.org.uk/bigtoddle/big_toddle_info_for_event/big_toddle_own_event.htm.

For more information please visit the website www.bigtoddle.co.uk or call 0845 270 9900.

CARMARTHENSHIRE’S TOP TEN SUMMER HOLIDAYS
-includes back to nature camping, a garden cottage lost in time and landing a sewin for supper-

Fancy getting away from the crowds and enjoying simple pleasures in breathtaking surroundings? There is no need to dig out your passport - although you may have to cross a border - as Carmarthenshire is only two hours from Birmingham and three and a half from London.

Most summer suggestions here are based on a family of four or six sharing in peak season (June-August), except for the foodie and blacksmithing weekend suggestions, which are based on two people.

1) Ridges to be climbed : A week of camping, nature and walking in the Cambrian Mountains and Western Brecons

Set your compass for Rhandirmwyn Camping and Caravan Club Site if you’re looking for true isolation. There’s no mobile phone reception at this remote site at the bottom of the Tywi Valley, just lush steep green hills all around. A week here makes a perfect base for wildlife viewing and walking in the Cambrian Mountains and Brecon Beacons. The RSPB Dinas Nature Reserve, a few miles from the site is a great place to enjoy a walk through alder and oak woodland, past fast-flowing and spectacular rivers. You should have no problem spotting a red kite, and in the summer look out for pied flycatchers, redstarts, common sandpipers, dippers and grey wagtails.

Cyclists can enjoy the circular all-ability access trail in Cwmrhaeadr Forest, only a mile and half from the site, while the town of Llandovery, just over seven miles away, has a cobbled market square, a number of old inns, local craft shops and cafes. Just a few miles further afield the Brecon Beacons National Park offers some of the most spectacular landscapes for walking.

Prices start from £134 for a 7 night stay at Rhandirmwyn Camping and Caravan Site based on a family of four (2 adults + 2 children) www.campingandcaravanningclub.co.uk or call 01550 760257

2) Horses to be ridden: Riding holiday in the Cothi Valley
The Five Saints Riding Centre is situated in the Cothi Valley at the start of the Cambrian Mountains. A remote farm, it offers riding holidays with direct access to a variety of terrain - from forestry tracks to mountain moors for all levels of riders with hacking groups of no more than 8 horses. Suitable for beginners from 12 years and upwards or experienced riders from 8 years and upwards it makes a great base for a family riding break and exploring Carmarthenshire. Eggs come from the farm’s free-range corn fed hens and the guest book is crammed with comments about Oz's fabulous cooking. His secret is simple - a passion for cooking and using organic and home grown produce where possible.

A week’s stay is priced at £600 per person B&B based on four sharing, 1 hour ride, 2 half day rides, 3 full day rides, picnic lunches, afternoon tea daily & evening meal on your night of arrival www.fivesaints.com or call 01558 650580

3) Castles to be conquered: A ‘Castles and Gardens’ holiday around the boutique market town of Llandeilo
In this corner of West Wales you will literally be tripping up over award winning gardens and spectacular castles. Set in the beautiful Tywi valley of Carmarthenshire, Aberglasney House features one of the finest gardens in Wales which have been an inspiration to poets since 1477. Wander a few miles down the road and you come across the National Botanic Garden of Wales, voted ‘No 1 Garden to Visit in Wales’ by BBC Gardeners’ World 2010 poll. What’s more you can actually stay in the grounds of Aberglasney in one of two self catering cottages, Gardeners cottage and Coachmans cottage. Both have one double and one twin bedroom and are beautifully furnished.

The market down of Llandeilo is a few miles away and the surrounding area will leave you spoilt for choice if you love castles. There’s Carreg Cennen, Wales' most Romantic Ruin as voted by Countryfile 2011, Dinefwr Park and Castle and Dryslwyn Castle which stands on top of a hill overlooking the Tywi valley, all within a short drive from one another.

A week’s stay in one of the Aberglasney cottages is £885 based on four sharing for limited dates in July and August www.aberglasney.org or call 01558 668998

4) Sewin to be fished: A week’s fishing at Capel Dewi
Not many counties can boast to having the King and Queen of Sewin and Salmon rivers, as well as a superb coastline varying from peaceful estuaries to two of Wales’ longest beaches. The Capel Dewi Uchaf Country House works with the local fishing club on the River Towy and recently a guest caught a 17lb salmon! Stay at this five hundred year old Grade II listed farmhouse where traditional charm, meets modern creature comforts and you may land a large supper too. If you don’t, then just across the road is Carmarthenshire’s finest restaurant Y Polyn where you can fill your boots with local specialities such as Black Mountain Smoked Salmon, Welsh Black Beef and a cheeseboard to write home about.

A week’s stay at Capel Dewi Uchaf Country House costs from £600 based on family sharing a 5-star self-catering cottage (sleeps 6) or a family of four in a family suite on a B & B basis in the main house from £700. Private fishing on the River Towy can be arranged for £30 a day per person/per rod http://walescottageholidays.uk.com or call 01267 290799

5) Beaches to be combed: A week’s family seaside fun
Pendine is an award-winning beach of two halves that will please everyone from tots who want to build sandcastles to Mum and Dad who want a bracing walk. Head west for dramatic cliffs below which you’ll discover a wealth of rock pools, and above wild cliff top paths linking up with the Pembrokeshire border. To the east is 6 miles of glorious sandy beach, home to the setting of historic land speed records. The huge expanse of sand is ideal for flying kites, getting the family involved in a spot of beach cricket or shell collecting. Further west there’s a new 5 mile stretch of the All Wales Coastal Path that runs from Pendine to Amroth with a lovely pub at the end for that rewarding pint.

To make the most of your coastal break download Discover Carmarthenshire’s brand new guide Discovering Beaches, Coves & Coastline of Carmarthenshire from www.discovercarmarthenshire.com and stay at Seascape Villa, luxury apartments overlooking the beach at Pendine Sands. 7) Food to be enjoyed: A foodie break in Newcastle Emlyn
Carmarthenshire has huge agricultural production so it’s no surprise that the produce is well known - Caws Cenarth cheeses (a favourite of Prince Charles), Carmarthen ham (thought to have inspired the Romans to make Parma ham) Cambrian Mountain lamb, traditional ciders and beers, Black Mountain beef to name a few. Newcastle Emlyn is one of the market towns at the centre of all this, making it the perfect destination for a weekend of dining out, gourmet picnics, cheese tasting, and riverside garden afternoon teas. On the way to the traditional market town, where even the Spar has a hand painted sign, stop off at Heavenly Ice Cream and Sweet Shop in Llandeilo for delicious organic Welsh ice cream – they even promise to make anyone’s favourite or quirky favour of ice cream within 48 hours notice.

Check into the newly refurbished Gwesty’r Emlyn Hotel, settle into the Gwenllian Suite, before heading out to discover the town’s gastro delights on every corner. A gastronomic evening at Ludo’s at The Coopers is then on the cards, where head chef Ludovic Dieumegard (semi-finalist in Masterchef Professionals 2009) cooks in an intimate dining room, so you’ll need to book ahead.
