Masterchef FinalistsMasterChef Finalists Pop Up at Meza for London Restaurant Festival (4-18 October 2010).

The hottest tables in town are being offered at Meza in Soho in the form of a MasterChef ‘pop up’ restaurant, to coincide with this year’s London Restaurant Festival (4-18 October).

Fans of the hugely popular BBC One series will be able to taste some of the most memorable dishes cooked by the three finalists of this year’s MasterChef - winner Dhruv Baker and Tim Kinnaird and Alex Rushmer.

Dhruv said: “We’re so excited that we’ve got the opportunity to work together again. When the series ended, a ‘pop up’ was what we talked about doing and it’s fantastic that it’s come together with Meza.”

Alex said: “It’s been nearly a year since we cooked together during the filming for the series and I can’t wait to get back into the kitchen with Dhruv and Tim. We’ve learnt a lot since then and this will give us the opportunity to showcase not only our dishes from the show but what we’ve learnt in the last year.”

Tim added: “MasterChef is an extraordinary experience and since the series finished it’s been somewhat of a rollercoaster for the three of us. To be back in the kitchen together will be fantastic and cooking for the public is what it’s all about – we can’t wait!”

Dhruv will be heading up the kitchen every night (Tuesday – Saturday) with Tim and Alex joining him every Thursday, Friday and Saturday.

Each Tuesday and Wednesday, special guests from previous MasterChef series will join Dhruv at this exciting and ground breaking event to share their signature dishes.

Shine TV, the producers of MasterChef, has collaborated with leading restaurant group, D & D London, to provide a unique opportunity for fans of the series and any lover of good food to sample the cuisine of these talented cooks.

D & D Marketing Director, Simon Willis, said: “Nearly 7 million people watched Dhruv become this year’s MasterChef champion and the three finalists really did capture the hearts of food lovers across the country. We’re delighted to be working with them to provide the platform for their first ‘pop up’ together and particularly during London Restaurant Festival which celebrates London’s diverse range of restaurants. It really will offer something unique in London this year.”

Located in the heart of Soho London, Meza Bar and Grill is the perfect destination to host the pop-up restaurant, offering a modern and exciting space.

THE LONDON MAGAZINE TO HOST THE INAUGURAL

‘GREAT LITTLE SHOP AWARDS’ AND ANNOUNCE ‘BEST LITTLE SHOP IN LONDON’
This September, the London Magazine is proud to announce that it will host the first ever Great Little Shop Awards, a celebration of independent retailers and their unique contribution to the capital. Over the course of the last ten months, London Magazine readers and our panel of celebrity judges have shortlisted fabulous small shops across ten can’t-live-without categories; now the time has come to announce the final winners of the coveted awards.

On the 27th September, the night of our awards ceremony, we will also be announcing the ‘Best Little Shop in London’ as voted for by our readers and selected by our panel of celebrity judges.

The plight of small shops is a cause close to the heart of many Londoners, as we see not only individual businesses but also a way of life under threat from high street homogenisation and the growth of shopping centres and superstores. The GLSA campaign has gone from strength to strength, attracting huge support from readers and Mayor Boris Johnson.

Despite difficult economic times, there is a growing demand in London for shops that offer personal service and the unique, unusual, handpicked or locally produced – whether it be a cutting edge womenswear collection in an independent boutique, or food shops offering regional or artisanal produce.

The Great Little Shop Awards are chaired by the luxury lifestyle specialist and style queen Lucia van der Post, with a judging panel comprised of Mariella Frostrup, Alannah Weston, Peter York, Mark Hix, Nicky Haslam, Petra Ecclestone, Alexia Inge, Celia Birtwell, Hugh Johnson and Marcus Wareing and many other high-profile supporters.

Different categories for retail outlets have been nominated on a monthly basis over the course of the year and are as follows:
December: delicatessens and specialist food shops
January: Beauty retailers and chemists
February: Fashion, accessory and shoe shops for women
March: Florists and plantsmen
April: Book, music, news and film shops
May: Wine merchants and specialist drinks suppliers
June: Art and interiors shops
July: Toyshops and sweetshops
August: Butchers, bakers, fishmongers and greengrocers September: Tailors, shirtmakers and shoemakers for men

The awards will take place on Monday 27th September from 6.30 to 8.30pm at One Aldwych, London’s most stylish independent hotel. They will be hosted by Lucia van der Post and the London Magazine and attended by an array of prestigious supporters as well as the proud managers and proprietors of our winning Great Little Shops.

THE CONCORDIA FOUNDATION CELEBRATES ITS 15TH ANNIVERSARY
The Concordia Foundation celebrates its 15th anniversary with 50 concert performances in London. “Doctors can heal the body, but it is music that uplifts the spirits,” said the late Mother Theresa to the Concordia Foundation. A not-for-profit charity, which, this year, celebrates its 15th anniversary, Concordia is the brainchild of Gillian Humphreys, an international singer and broadcaster, who established the Foundation in 1995 as a way of building bridges through music and the arts and providing much needed concert platforms for new, emerging young artists.

This year, in an illustration of the work that the Concordia Foundation has developed over the past 15 years, it will present 50 concert performances in London culminating in a Gala orchestral concert, ‘Bach to Bernstein’ at the Queen Elizabeth Hall on Monday 22nd November 2010.

Star artists involved with Concordia include:

Colin Lee, tenor. Colin Lee has been associated with the Foundation since his first Concordia world tour in 1996 and is a Trustee of the Foundation.
Colin, a greatly acclaimed tenor, appears worldwide in roles that include Rossini’s Count Almaviva (Royal Opera, Opera- Bastille, Vienna State Opera, WNO, ENO), Argirio in Tancredi (Theatre an der Wien), Don Narciso in Il Turco in Italia (Royal Opera, Berlin State Opera), Arturo in Lucia di Lammermoor (Metropolitan Opera, New York), 2010 Royal Opera, Tonio in La Fille de Regimen; Rodrigo in La Donna del lago (Paris Opéra). Colin sings Don Pasquale at Holland Park in June 2011 and he returns to the Metropolitan Opera House, New York in 2012 to sing Count Almaviva.

Phuong Nguyen, classical accordionist and winner of the Concordia Barthel Prize in 2003. Phuong was interned in Hong Kong for four years, where his musical abilities were first spotted. He was brought to England to study at the Royal Academy of Music and has been involved with Concordia ever since. As a Concordia Ambassador, he has represented the Foundation in Vietnam, and received a Concordia travel scholarship, which enabled him to travel the world on the QE2. He was a presenter at the Concordia’s 10th Anniversary Gala Concert at the Queen Elizabeth Hall.

Satoko Fukuda, violin. Satoko studied at the Yehudi Menuhin School and the Royal College of Music. As a Concordia Prizewinning Ambassador, she has performed in Italy, Switzerland and Cuba. She appears regularly in Concordia concerts at St Martin-in-the-Fields, St James’s Piccadilly, St Paul's Covent Garden and at the National Portrait Gallery as well as Young Audiences projects in London and Oxford. She will be performing in the Gala concert in November.

John Wilson, conductor. John was shortlisted for last year’s prestigious Royal Philharmonica Society’s Conductor’s Award, despite being still in his mid-30s. John has established himself an enviable reputation as a conductor, arranger and scholar and is recognised internationally as a passionate advocate of British music. Recently, John appeared at the BBC Proms, conducting his own orchestra with the Rogers and Hammerstein Song Book. He will conduct the Serenade to Music at Concordia’s 15th Anniversary Gala Concert at the Queen Elizabeth Hall on 22nd November 2010.

Other featured Concordia artists include:
James Cleverton, baritone; Ahmed Dickinson, classical guitar; Gareth McLearnon, flute and other Foundation prizewinners. They will perform with the Charities Philharmonia Orchestra, conducted by Michael Alexander Young, with soloists from the Yehudi Menuhin School. Charities Philharmonia was formed in 2006 and has established itself on the London music scene as an institution with a unique mission; forming a close alliance with one UK charity producing concerts solely to raise funds and awareness for the charity. Their vision is to provide outstanding music for outstanding causes. Michael Alexander Young, Music Director of Charities Philharmonia. Previously a prize winning finalist at both the Leeds Conductors Competition, 2005 and the International Pedrotti Competition, 2006 Michael is Music Director of Charities Philharmonia, the Beethoven Camerata and Jankelevic Ensemble as well as regular guest conductor of ensembles across Europe. ABOUT THE CONCORDIA FOUNDATION
Gillian Humphreys, Founder of the Concordia Foundation own career was impressive. A soprano, who studied at The Royal Academy of Music, Gillian went on to gain an Arts Council Scholarship, which took her abroad and secured her a place as principal soprano with the D’Oyle Carte Opera Co in UK and USA. Later, Gillian’s Concordia Theatre Company regularly presented international gala shows, classical recitals and lectures on the Cunard, Seabourn, and Royal Viking Line. She was one of the lucky ones. Each year, thousands of musicians graduate and, like Gillian, dream of performing at the world’s finest concert halls and opera houses. Sheer numbers combined with limited opportunities mean that for many, this dream never becomes a reality. It is for this reason that, in 1995, appreciating her own good fortune, Gillian scaled back her own career to establish the Concordia Foundation, providing concert opportunities, mentoring and financial support for young musicians.

THE CONCORDIA FOUNDATION’S WORK
The Foundation has helped young musicians across the globe to achieve their dreams, while introducing classical music to a young audience. Its work is divided into three areas:

* The Concordia International Ensemble – This initiates and develops exchange visits and educational links between the UK and other countries across the world.

* The Emerging Artists – This encourages, supports and provides a platform for new and emerging artists.

* Young Audiences – This develops music and art educational programmes with school children in Tower Hamlets and presents specially written children’s productions at Wilton’s Music Hall.

CLAIRE CLARK AFTERNOON TEA AT THE FIFTH FLOOR EXTENDED DUE TO POPULAR DEMAND
Due to popular demand Harvey Nichols is delighted to announce that the Claire Clark Afternoon Tea at the Fifth Floor Restaurant has been extended for a further two weeks and will now be available until Sunday 10 October.

The truly exceptional Afternoon Tea is a celebration of the world’s most fashionable cities, with New York, London, Paris and Milan inspired sandwiches, freshly made scones served from a dessert trolley with a selection of jams and, of course, an exquisite selection of cakes:

The intense Bubblegum Marshmallow Pavlova, a must-try explosion of flavour, is a softly peaked meringue, baked crisp on the outside and gooey on the inside. The base is filled with bubblegum pastry cream and sat on a thin disc of white chocolate with colourful sprinkles. The Lemon Madeira Cake, subtler but equally delicious: an individual pound cake made with fresh lemon zest and with a hidden centre of lemon curd and a lemon balm crème diplomat

As part of the exclusive Claire Clark collaboration, a mini pop up patisserie is open on the Fifth Floor for two months only. This is the first time Claire’s cakes have been available outside the restaurants and hotels she has worked with: The French Laundry, three Michelin starred restaurant in California, Sandy Lane in Barbados and, The Wolseley, Claridges, The Ritz and the House of Commons closer to home.

Taking inspiration from childhood favourites, Claire has created a wonderful selection of nostalgic treats for her pop up patisserie. Using only the best ingredients, such as Amedei 70% Toscano Black chocolate for the Jaffa cake macaroons, Claire has turned simple biscuits into something luxurious and irresistible. The patisserie selection includes: Fizzy strawberry marshmallows, Toffee bark with salted pecans, Mint rocky road and Caramel corn. Traditional loaf cakes including Orange, pistachio and semolina cake and Rhubarb and spelt cake are available in smaller sizes.

A special bespoke tea blend, with an Earl Grey base and a light fragrant lavender note has been created to complement the afternoon tea and is also available to purchase from the Foodmarket at £3.95 for 125g.

The Claire Clark Afternoon Tea is available at the newly refurbished Fifth Floor Restaurant for a limited period until Sunday 10 October, priced at £35, £45 with a glass of Nyetimber Classic Cuvée 2005 or £50 including a glass of Nyetimber Rosé 2007. To book a table, please contact 020 7235 5250.

The Claire Clark Patisserie is open in the Fifth Floor Foodmarket until Thursday, 18 November.

STUDENTS CAN BEANS IN FAVOUR OF PIZZA AND STIR FRY, SAYS GOOD FOOD SURVEY
Perennial favourite beans on toast is falling out of favour for modern students, who favour more experimentation in the kitchen, according to a new survey from BBC Good Food magazine. The survey of 1,076 readers of BBC Magazines found that beans on toast was the favourite dish for students at Universities in the 60s, 70s, 80s and 90s but that by the noughties it had plummeted out of the top five. Spaghetti Bolognese and pizza are now more popular, along with dishes such as stir fries. However the breakfast fry up and roast dinner remain as popular today for students as they were for their parents when they were students.

The findings show the influence of international cuisine in our diets over the years, with the Oriental- inspired stir fry seeing a dramatic increase, from just 4% regularly consuming it in the 1960s, to 53% today, making it the 5th most popular dish from the past decade. The number of students eating pizza has increased from 26% of students in the eighties to 57% today.

The survey also found that students’ culinary abilities have improved over the past twenty years, with the number of students able to cook more than six dishes from scratch rising from 53% in the 1980s to 64% in the noughties. However, among the upcoming crop of students, according to parents and relatives, only 42% could cook more than six dishes, though this rose to 56% for students currently at University, suggesting a degree of culinary experimentation in student kitchens.

According to Gillian Carter, editor of Good Food magazine: “The sight of a student kitchen can make a parent’s heart sink, but these findings reflect the changes in our diet and show the cosmopolitan influence spreading from our restaurants and homes into halls of residence. However it seems the latest crop of students need to learn new skills in the kitchen as well as the lecture hall in order to give themselves the right brain food. In this month’s Good Food magazine we have four student staples including super healthy Spaghetti Bolognese with a twist, vegetable curry and an all-day breakfast, all high in nutrition and low cost.”

October’s Good Food magazine, featuring easy meals for students, is on sale now priced at £3.40. www.bbcgoodfood.com has more than 6,000 recipes online.

WALES THE TRUE TASTE AWARD-WINNING CHEESES FOR THE MOST DISCERNING OF CHEESE CONNOISSEURS
The Wales the True Taste Award-winners have all the cheeses you need to create a first-class cheeseboard! The Great British Cheese Festival at Cardiff Castle is taking place on 25 – 26 September, but you can enjoy a taste of Wales at home with some delicious varieties such as Hafod Cheddar, Caws Cenarth Perl Lâs or Gorwydd Caerphilly.

Winning two gold Wales the True Taste Awards in 2009/2010 (in the small dairy and organic categories), Hafod Welsh Organic Cheddar produces a deliciously smooth, traditional hard cheddar. Owned by Sam and Rachel Holden, Hafod farm is Wales’s longest certified organic dairy farm. The cheese is made from unpasteurised milk from Hafod's 65 Ayrshire cows and it has a close-knit texture and a rich golden yellow colour. Its flavours are predominantly buttery, rich and nutty with a slight tang on the finish. Their cheese is available to buy online at www.hafodcheese.co.uk (RRP: £7.50 for 350g) and various specialist cheese shops including Neal’s
Yard Dairy, London.

Nestled at the foot of the Black Mountains, in the East of the Brecon Beacons National Park, lies Caws Mynydd Du (meaning ‘Black Mountains Cheese’). Awarded a bronze Wales the True Taste Award in 2009 in the small dairy category for its Dragon’s Back Cheese, Caws Mynydd Du produces sheep cheeses made from their Poll Dorset and Poll Dorset X sheep which are fed purely on grass and crops grown and harvested on the farm. The Dragon’s Back Cheese is a handmade, pasteurised, semi-hard cheese. It has complex flavours which are delicate, yet rounded with a slight hint of citrus. Available nationally through www.cawsmynydddu.com (RRP: £17.50 per kg + P & P) at various independent shops nationwide including Mootown in London.

South Caernarfon Creameries is Wales's leading farmer-owned dairy co-operative which won a gold Wales the True Taste Award in 2006 (in the large manufacturer of the year category) for its Old Shire Special Reserve cheddar. This is a smooth textured cheese with a tangy and balanced, full-bodied flavour. Only the best cheese is selected for their Special Reserve grade and the maturing process takes up to 18 months. Available to buy at www.sccwales.co.uk (£2.00 for 200g), Sainsbury’s, Tesco, Marks & Spencer and Morrisons.

Trethowan’s Dairy won silver in the small dairy category of the 2009 Wales the True Taste Awards with its Gorwydd Caerphilly. Made using a traditional recipe with unpasteurised milk, the ingredients combined with working the curd by hand, keep the cheese true to the origins of traditional Caerphilly. The cheese is matured on the farm for two months and gives a fresh lemony taste with a creamy texture to the outer and a firmer but moist inner. Available to buy at Trethowan’s Dairy - Tel: 0117 902 0332 (RRP: £20 per kg) and at markets across the UK including St Nicholas Market, Bristol and London Borough Market; see www.gorwydd.com for a full list.

Winning several Wales the True Taste Awards in 2003 and 2006 for its Perl Lâs, Caws Cenarth is a highly regarded cheese producer. Thelma Adams, owner of Caws Cenarth, was also awarded the Wales the True Taste Lifetime Achievement Award in 2007 for her dedication to the Welsh dairy industry. The Perl Lâs cheese was created as a result of a happy accident. A selection of mature Caerffili cheeses had become naturally blue and so was born the Caws Cenarth Perl Lâs was born. The taste is a round creaminess with lingering blue overtones. It is unlike any other blue, strong in taste yet delicate enough to satisfy the choosiest of cheese lovers. Available to buy at www.cawscenarth.co.uk (RRP: £6.95 for 450g).

All the above Welsh producers have won accolades at the Wales The True Taste Food & Drink Awards, which were launched in 2002. They are managed by the Welsh Assembly Government as part of their commitment to developing the food and drink sector and to building awareness of the Welsh food brand 'Wales the True Taste'. Year-on-year the True Taste Awards grow in strength and popularity and are regarded as the 'Oscars' of the Welsh food industry.

COVENT GARDEN LONDON CELEBRATES THE BEST OF BRITISH DURING LONDON DESIGN FESTIVAL
Covent Garden will again play host to the latest works from rising stars of the British design community as a partner of the London Design Festival 2010 (18-26 September).

The centrepiece of the Covent Garden Design District – a collection of the most creative local talents - will be British artist Johnny Hawkes’s ‘Sphelix’, which will be located on the North Piazza. In a fitting tribute to the area’s heritage, Johnny was a former stallholder in the area’s famous Apple Market - now a recognised design and craft hub for hand-made, UK produced goods. His return to the area is a fitting celebration of the area’s design credentials and its incubation of emerging talent.

Sphelix is a two-part form which seamlessly entwines to create a perfect sphere - representing the coming together of communities. It promises to entrance and delight public and design audiences alike for the duration of the London Design Festival.

Fresh from a high-profile appearance at the recent Vintage at Goodwood festival, Chalkyvan will also make an appearance on the Piazza on September 18. The customised vintage VW campervan’s blank panels are ready and waiting for Londoners to unleash their creativity and make their mark on the Piazza with any passing design, style-related comments and observations.

Newcastle public art project ‘Love Me Live with Me’ will also make an appearance on the Piazza on September 22 as part of its tour across London. The ‘Love Me Live with Me’ cart will be distributing free art sourced from North-East designer markets at random to the public, encouraging them to live with their object for a week, submit their thoughts to the project’s blog and then pass the object on for someone else to enjoy. Londoners will have the chance to adopt anything from a small print project to precious glass sculptures worth over £500 each.

With stunning architecture across an historic estate, contrasted with the regular appearance of much-lauded contemporary installations and exhibitions from the likes of Jeff Koons to Banksy, Covent Garden is a prime destination on London’s design map.

Covent Garden Brand Director Bev Churchill commented, “Over the past few years we’ve welcomed the international creative community back to Covent Garden and we’re delighted that Covent Garden is back on the map for this year’s Design Festival.”
