Walking is fast becoming the leisure activity of choice for those in the know. And new research by Air New Zealand with YouGov, just out, found more than a quarter (29%) of the adult UK population have been inspired to do more exercise and increase their fitness following the Olympic and Paralympic Games, with walking talking gold as the most popular exercise of choice. The new walking craze isn’t all down to the after-glow of Team GB’s gold medal glory – tight budgets could also have their role to play. A separate survey among Londoners revealed more than half (53%) walk because it’s free!
Do you think you could keep up?
If you’re up for the challenge or and fancy a wonderful trip, Air New Zealand has launched a global search to find Britain’s greatest walker for the chance to tackle New Zealand’s nine famous Great Walks in just nine weeks. To win a place on this wild adventure, entrants upload either a short YouTube video or a Pinterest board of inspiring images.
Air New Zealand’s search for The Great Walker is being run in association with New Zealand’s Department of Conservation (DOC) and will see four global winners take on New Zealand’s premier DOC tracks; Abel Tasman Coast, Heaphy, Kepler, Lake Waikaremoana, Milford, Rakiura, Routeburn, Tongariro and Whanganui Journey.
The four Great Walkers will fly Air New Zealand to the southern most point of the country to and then make their way north conquering one track each week for nine weeks. Ambassadors will also enjoy other Kiwi outdoor experiences including local wildlife encounters and adventure activities such as mountain biking, canyoning and jet boating.
The group will be joined along the way by Air New Zealand and DOC staff and celebrity guests. Each winner will share their journey with the world via regular blog updates.
Air New Zealand Head of Community James Gibson describes the trip as a once in a lifetime experience. “New Zealand is internationally renowned for its stunning scenery and we’re thrilled to be able to offer people the chance to come and see it for themselves. Whether someone is a nature lover, has a curiosity for the great outdoors or fancies themselves as the next Bear Grylls, we want to hear from them,” says Gibson.
DOC Director Commercial Business Unit Dave Wilks says: “We are looking for 'Great Walkers' with the total package - people with personality, creativity, a knack for blogging and story telling as well a passion for outdoor adventure.”

Entrants will then be shortlisted on the website and four winners chosen as judged by an official judging panel and by the public through the website. February 2013 to complete the epic Kiwi adventure of a lifetime.

MORE SIMPLY FISH IN THE SEA
Only a month since it opened its doors, Camden-based restaurant Simply Fish is already creating a stir in North London. Customers are flocking here to enjoy the relaxed, convivial atmosphere and spectacular menu of fish and seafood, delivered daily from its own merchants in Cornwall and then transformed with a range of Mediterranean, Asian and Middle Eastern influences.
Indeed Simply Fish’s user friendly and versatile concept has proved so successful that owner Chris Singham is to fast track his plans to expand the brand.
Simply Fish will open in St Paul’s on 13th February 2013, whilst a third outlet will launch in Chiswick in the summer.
“The reaction to Simply Fish has exceeded all our expectations,” reveals Singham. “Customers seem to love the flexibility of being able to choose their own fish or seafood and then deciding how they want it cooked and accompanied. Our deli offering has also been extremely well received, with time-pressed Camdenites really appreciating the extended opening hours.”
Having ‘road tested’ the Simply Fish model in Camden, Singham is confident that it will work in very varied locations. “We are naturally aware that St Paul’s, with its weekday trading and business and tourist oriented customer base, is very different to Camden, but we believe diners will be equally receptive to what we have to offer. In addition, Chiswick will also be an important development, helping us grow the brand in purely residential areas.”
Singham realises that Simply Fish may have to modify its offering to meet the needs of customers within three such distinct areas, but is adamant that its core values will remain unchanged. “What is important to us at this stage is to demonstrate Simply Fish’s versatility. We are determined not to be pigeon-holed as being suitable for a particular market only.”
Once Simply Fish has launched in St Paul’s and Chiswick, the plan is to continue to expand, not just in the capital but beyond.
You could just say that the world is Simply Fish’s oyster!

RESTAURANT WITHOUT RECIPES: PIPSDISH POP-UP GOES PERMANENT AT THE GARAGE
A self-styled ‘restaurant without recipes’, it’s all farm fresh ingredients, daily-invented impromptu dishes and home-cooked food with a modern twist at PipsDish @ The Garage – set in an old Citroen repair workshop.
Originally created as a temporary dining experience by former BBC producer, cook and author Philip Dundas – who penned the antidote to paint-by-numbers celebrity cookbooks, ‘Cooking Without Recipes’ – the Islington pop-up is here to see us through to the festive season. Together with his ‘kitchen soulmate’ Mary Doherty, the space has created a foodie fanfare with people returning again and again to the place where you just eat what you’re given.
Ironically, it was where Philip used to take his car to be serviced before he saw the potential of the concrete floors, exposed brickwork and vaulted corrugated roof to create a no–frills, function-over-form dining room. It provides the perfect theatre for Philip’s cooking to take centre stage. Sitting at old wallpaper pasting tables on old Sunday school chairs and benches, supper is just £30 for canapés and three courses of modern country cooking conjured up by Philip and Mary on the day. It’s bring-your-own, too, with no corkage making for a smiley supper indeed.
The creativity that takes place in the kitchen eschews lists, measurements and timing in favour of simplicity, flavour and innovation; not only does it keep things interesting for diners, but also for Philip and Mary who don’t need to replicate cookie-cutter recipes each and every night. On any given evening, diners can expect the likes of Cumbrian black-face lamb with chicory & anchovy dressing; Shorthorn boeuf bourguignon with rainbow chard; squid stuffed with chorizo & tomato sauce; spiced roast shoulder of mutton with fennel; and hake with cavalo nero & romesco. Sweet is just as good as savoury, with decadent delights such as baked plum amarettini with marscapone & vanilla ice-cream, lemon creams with shortbread and baked peach Alaska with Chantilly ice-cream. And with everything delivered from trusted Islington supplier Farm Direct, diners are assured of rare produce that is fresh, seasonal and very British.
Food isn’t the only focus at The Garage, however; above everything else is Philip’s love of people, which is exactly why on Wednesdays Philip’s team works on a social responsibility project with Age UK to provide nourishing free lunches for local Islington elderly. What’s more, the emphasis on people extends not only to what’s cooking but also the experience itself. Diners are introduced to the menu at the beginning of any given evening, with each dish explained and explored by Philip himself, and the open kitchen and shared tables lend themselves to a warm, convivial atmosphere that have most chatting as much with a stranger as with their friends. Says Philip: “The Garage is about stripping back all the barriers you find in conventional restaurants. Here it’s about people and food. How when they come together in authentic, hospitable surroundings it’s possible to create a homely dining experience with style.”
While it’s freestyle all the way in terms of food, The Garage’s four-day week does adhere to a loose schedule. Fish leaps fresh from the Cornish coast at the Thursday Fish Supper, while Friday and Saturday you can expect anything to be served, but you’ll never know until it hits the plate. “Not having a choice is what people tell us is their favourite part of the experience. It’s like going out but coming home,” says Philip. And the best of these is when all the family can gather at the epic Sunday lunches when kids under eight eat for free and those under 12 eat for half-price. The Garage is also a showcase for reclaimed furniture from vintage experts Old Albion and kitchen bric-a-brac Philip has collected over the years; and the book can be picked up for those who want to recreate similarly stress-free fare in their own home.
The Garage is just one part of the whole that makes up the PipsDish brand. With a second book in the writing and the search for more urban spaces with a twist, there is never a quiet moment for Philip. So for a culinary retreat from the city, park up at PipsDish @ The Garage this winter.

With spots in Notting Hill, South Kensington and Westfield Stratford, the country-in-the-city style restaurants take sustainability seriously. From farm to fork, all the dishes are made using only the freshest seasonal British ingredients. Sourced from welfare-friendly farms, from the Isle of Wight to the Scottish Highlands, everything has been grown, reared and caught in harmony with the environment wherever possible, meaning it’s packed with bags of natural flavour.
Inspired by the season’s rich colours and flavours, executive chef Raymond Fulton-Corrie has created a menu bursting with feel-good dishes and reassuringly simple fare, where the bountiful, vibrant ingredients speak for themselves.
Little ones can join in too, with a dedicated children’s menu for £7.95. Pint-sized dishes include chicken casserole with creamy mashed potatoes, battered fish fingers with skin-on chips and Charter pie with free-range chicken, leeks, mushrooms and ham hock in a creamy sauce followed by a choice of ice-cream.
The onset of autumn means we bid farewell to barbeques and welcome back Sunday roasts, and there’s no better place to enjoy this very British tradition than Bumpkin. With menus starting from £17, choose between sirloin of beef from the Buccleuch Estate in Scotland, free-range whole roast chicken, outdoor reared pork loin rack or leg of grass-reared lamb, all served with a huge communal bowl of seasonal vegetables, roast potatoes and Yorkshire puddings.
Expert mixologists have created a selection of tempting tipples, made with the rich pickings of autumn fruit and berries, to keep you toasty during the colder months. Cosy concoctions include an apple and cinnamon or blackberry and mulberry martini, plum and liquorice sour and a morello cherry and chocolate martini. The environmentally friendly wine list has also undergone a revamp, with Master of Wine, Annette Scarfe sourcing an extensive selection of sustainable, organic or bio-dynamic bins. Logically listed and starting from a modest £16.95 a bottle, wines are grouped together according to depth and flavour. Supporting the blossoming English wine industry, the list also features several wines from closer to home, such as Limney Horsmonden Dry White, Gusbourne Rosé and Stopham Estate Pinot Gris.

HUSH MAYFAIR INTRODUCES REFRESHING NEW ADDITIONS TO ITS COCKTAIL MENU
Hush Mayfair, one of London’s best kept secrets and most prestigious cocktail destinations, is launching a series of specially crafted cocktail spritzers as part of its new cocktail offering in time for the new season.
Created by award-winning mixologist, Pedro Solorzano, visitors to the newly revamped Hush cocktail bar amongst the cobbled streets of Mayfair will be able to choose from a range of four spritzers including the delightfully sweet Pinot Grigio & Strawberry spritzer to the refreshingly cool Chenin Blanc & Elderflower spritzer.
In addition to the new and exclusive spritzers, guests can choose from a wide variety of drinks ensuring there is something to suit even the most unusual of tastes; from vintage champagne and molecular cocktails to a range of homemade flavoured iced teas.
Those feeling a little peckish can also try Hush’s range of tasty food bites including their indulgent Aspen Fries (chips tossed in parmesan and truffle oil) and Duck Spring Rolls - the perfect accompaniment to any drink.
Commenting on the new cocktail spritzers, Pedro says: “At the moment, spritzers are very popular and I wanted to create a series of drinks which are a little more adventurous. Whereas traditional spritzers are an acquired taste and don’t have much variation, our new range of spritzers are tailored to individual tastes in wine, giving a more personalised drinking experience.”
Hush Mayfair’s iconic cocktail lounge has recently undergone its first major reboot in over ten years. Designed by Alex Michaelis of Michaelis Boyd, the first floor cocktail lounge provides an intimate yet atmospheric setting, tucked away in the cobbled streets of Mayfair.

TORTILLA RESTAURANT GROUP ANNOUNCES THREE NEW OPENINGS: STRAND, BLUEWATER KENT AND SOUTHAMPTON Tortilla, the largest fast-casual Mexican restaurant group in the UK and Europe, is launching three new UK sites this autumn, bringing their signature California-Mexican burritos and tacos outside of London for the first time and providing an exciting new dining option that is fresh, authentic and fantastic value for money. The first new restaurant, which opened at the start of October, is located at Crown Estate’s 460 Strand site in central London, adjacent to Trafalgar Square. The other new sites, which will open in October and November, are located at Bluewater in Kent and in Hammerson’s WestQuay Shopping Centre in Southampton respectively.
Tortilla was founded by managing director Brandon Stephens, who took his inspiration from the neighbourhood taquerias of Los Angeles and San Francisco back in his native California. The first restaurant opened its doors in October 2007 and since then Tortilla has become the UK’s biggest burrito and taco chain with a reputation as one of the capital’s most up and coming restaurant groups
Brandon commented: “Burritos are healthy, affordable and nutritious, and taste fantastic. We are excited about bringing them to the good people of Kent and Hampshire - why should Londoners have all the fun?”
Russell Loveland, Senior Asset Manager at Lend Lease, co-owners and managers of Bluewater, said: "Tortilla is a great addition to the line-up of brands in Bluewater's Wintergarden, which re-opens on October 9 following a multi-million pound redevelopment. Tortilla is an exciting brand that not only provides customers with great food, but does so with a real sense of theatre. They will play a key role in the social dining experience that the Wintergarden will launch."
