Official Companion Volume to the National Geographic Channel Global Television Event
Synopsis: Whether they crawl, canter, fly or swim, millions of animals undertake epic journeys each year – some as long as 44,000 miles. For countless species, migration is a dramatic, dangerous and crucial endeavour – and it is arguably the greatest spectacle that nature orchestrates.
The migration story – what drives animals to make their journeys, how scientists track their movements, the impact of habitat loss and climate change, and the latest scientific discoveries helping us understand a world in constant motion – is explored in GREAT MIGRATIONS.
Written by Karen Kostyal, former senior editor of National Geographic magazine, the book is the companion volume to the seven-hour, high-definition National Geographic Channel global television event Great Migrations, premiering this November in 166 countries and 34 languages.
‘Migration is the ultimate story of instinct and survival. For without the great migrations – the waves of wildebeests crossing the Serengeti, the wing beats of a billion monarch butterflies lifting from the mountains of Mexico, the armada of Pacific walruses floating with the ice through the Bering Strait – whole species would head toward extinction. But what internal and external forces drive animals to make these risky yet deliberate journeys, crossing hundreds, sometimes thousands of miles? What tells them when to move, and what guides them to their destinations? What propels them to face predators and natural forces that are sure to cost the lives of many of them, particularly their young?’ writes Kostyal.
Filled with fascinating facts and action-packed photographs, the book takes readers around the globe as it offers exciting new perspectives on migratory animals and their remarkable behaviours, some of which have never before been seen or recorded. The epic drama is brought to life through more than 250 state-of-the art colour images, including heart-pounding scenes captured by world-class photographers and iconic stills from the television programme.
In his ‘Producer’s Notebook’ afterword, David Hamlin writes about the three-year TV production odyssey, during which the film team travelled more than 400,000 miles, withstood temperatures from minus 20°F to 120°F, and spent more than 200 hours filming from helicopters, more than 100 hours filming from shark cages and more than 400 hours filming while hanging in trees.
In addition to the book and television programme, the Great Migrations topic will be featured on nearly every National Geographic media platform: the project is the largest cross-platform initiative in the National Geographic Society’s 122-year history.
Great Migrations is published in the UK by National Geographic books on 5 November 2010 priced £19.99

Hot Brands Cool Places Verdict
The photography is absolutely stunning, you cannot fail to be amazed by the richness and quality of the images and the sheer scale of the journeys taken by the different animals; as well as the lengths undertaken to capture the images. This is a wonderful book for all the family, and very appropriate for this time of year. A masterpiece! Highly Recommended!
DISNEYLAND PARIS “MAGIC WINDOW” AND CHRISTMAS LOG CAR AT THE PLAZA ATHÉNÉE
In their first ever hotel collaboration, Disney are working with Hôtel Plaza Athénée, one of Dorchester Collection, to unveil their ‘Magic Window’ on Avenue Montaigne, bringing the enchanting world of Disneyland to the chicest hotel in Paris. This advent calendar-like window will delight passers-by every day of the week and transport them into the exciting world of Disney this Christmas.
Every Wednesday the ‘magic’ window will be magically transformed into a theatre bringing the enchantment of Disneyland to the streets of Paris. Children and adults will be swept up into the fairytale as a new prince and princess from Disneyland appear as if by magic, stepping out of the window to greet passers-by, families and all those who are still young at heart for just four enchanting moments on 1, 8, 15 and 22 December from 5:30pm.
Meanwhile, in the famous Plaza Athénée pastry headquarters, Christophe Michalak, Head Pastry Chef, has created a mouth watering Christmas delight, the ‘Christmas log’, inspired by the Plaza Athénée’s children’s pedal car.Fresh from the pastry kitchens at 25 Avenue Montaigne, this ‘Christmas log’ is a treat for the eyes and mouth. Beneath its striking red bodywork, chocolate bumper and sugar windscreen lies a creative gem that subtly combines both flavour and texture to provide the perfect Christmas treat to share with friends and family.
