12 YEARS…10 COMPETITIONS…8 FEATURES…3 PARTIES…1 HUGE WEEKEND! SOUTH COAST’S BIGGEST ACTION SPORTS FESTIVAL HOSTS NEW FEATURES FOR 2010
The established Animal Windfest event held annually at Sandbanks, Poole will host a series of new features in its 12th year, to be staged between 10th - 12th September 2010.
The only free daytime beach sports festival in the UK, with three nights of ticketed evening parties, Windfest attracts the biggest names in the extreme sports industry and at least 10,000 visitors each year.
Going skyward for the first time ever, Windfest will play host to the Red Bull Matadors at 2.30pm on Sunday 12th September for an exhilarating air display with Red Bull VIP area on the beach below.
Two new sports will also add to the visual feast this year; Ultimate Beach Frisbee and Surf Ski – a long, narrow, lightweight kayak with an open (sit-on-top) cockpit, usually with a foot pedal controlled rudder. Surf ski racing will be held off the beach on both Saturday and Sunday.
Visitors to the event will be able to watch a 16-strong team Ultimate Beach Frisbee tournament at advanced level, yet members of the public will be welcome to enter and join in the competition.
Fans of Stand Up Paddle boarding (SUP) will be able to enter a new distance paddle around Brownsea Island on Saturday afternoon. Open to anyone, the paddle will run separately to the professional’s SUP race earlier in the day, organised by the sport’s governing body, BSUPA.
Organiser, Gary Willingham, is pleased to illustrate that despite Windfest’s maturity, the event continues to expand. He says: “The ever popular favourite aspects of the event continue to be in place whilst exciting new additions to the schedule have been agreed this year, such as the Red Bull Matadors which will bring yet another dimension to the event. Showcasing further beach and water sports which have not been seen competitively here before, the 2010 Animal Windfest will hopefully give further entertainment and attract visitors. We’re very excited about this year’s event.”
Other features throughout the two days include professional kitesurfing and windsurfing competitions, as well as free have-a-go trial opportunities for amateurs, fun slalom racing, Animal Bike Show, King Ramps’ skate ramp sponsored by Red Bull, wakeboarding slider pools, equipment demos and full Kids Zone with live acoustic music.
For more information on all aspects of the event go to www.animalwindfest.co.uk
GOODWOOD REVIVAL
Goodwood will be holding the Goodwood Revival from the 17th – 19th September. It is the world’s most popular historic motor race meeting and the only event of its kind to be staged entirely in the nostalgic time capsule of the 1940s, 50s and 60s that relives the glory days of Goodwood Motor Circuit.
A huge amount of effort goes into dressing up for this event, with many women choosing to wear costumes from the different decades, the results is a real ‘step back in time’ atmosphere. . The circuit has a celebratory feel with over 300 classic cars including vintage Ferraris and Jaguars worth millions of pounds, as well as numerous theatrical embellishments – including a period fairground, the famed Revival Market with many shops and stalls selling pre-1966 wares and goods, and dozens of character actors mingling in the crowds. On the Saturday they will be celebrating Ladies Day, giving all the ladies a chance to get into costume and attempt to win the prize of ‘Best Dressed.’ This is followed on Sunday with celebratory judges James Martin from Saturday Kitchen, Lloyd Grossman and Nick Mason from Pink Floyd. The mood is heightened as the skies overhead reverberate to the roar of wartime fighter aircraft including Spitfires and Hurricanes
The Goodwood Revival runs from September 17 to 19. To buy tickets visit http://www.goodwood.co.uk
NATIONAL TRUST RELIEVES BANK HOLIDAY GETAWAY STRESS
The National Trust is joining the drive to make the August bank holiday journeys less painful by setting up its own unique network of alternative ‘motorway service areas’.
The Bank Holiday is traditionally one of the busiest weekends for holiday traffic. According to the Highways Agency Friday evening, Saturday lunchtime and Monday afternoon are expected to be the busiest on the roads this weekend, especially on the main holiday routes, as people set out and return from short breaks or day trips.
As Mark Harold, National Trust Director for the South West, explained: “This weekend many holiday makers will make the journey to the South West heading for the beautiful coast and countryside, and with Britain’s roads taking the brunt of the holiday traffic we’re encouraging people to plan around the congestion to make the journey an enjoyable part of the holiday.”
Instead of a hurried burger and loo break at a motorway service area, the National Trust has identified over 30 of its places which are conveniently located only a few miles from motorway junctions and A roads.
These places, which include built properties and countryside locations, can provide a more relaxing break with plenty of space to park, picnic, walk the dog and enjoy tasty local, seasonal food during the holiday getaway.
Ideas include Killerton, an 18-century house with a choice of two tea-rooms, and picnic areas in its beautiful gardens and parkland, just seven miles from Junction 28 of the M5- a stretch of motorway that’s expected to see more than 3,500 vehicles an hour heading for the West Country at peak times.
Other suggestions include Stourhead, a magnificent landscape garden and mansion just 2∏ miles off the A303.
Chartwell, is also well worth considering as a break for people heading around the M25 towards the Channel Tunnel and Dover ferries as it’s only 6 ∏ miles from Junction 5 of the M25. The full list highlighting the major holiday routes, is on the National Trust website at: http://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/bankholiday
The National Trust initiative ties in with the ‘Don’t just drive, Discover’ campaign launched by the Highways Agency for the summer holidays. The Agency, which manages England’s network of motorways and major A roads, has been urging families to plan their journeys as much as they plan their holidays and take breaks to avoid tiring and stressful drives. [1]
"In contrast to the daily commute, the holiday getaway is made up of longer, often unfamiliar journeys,” said Steve Crosthwaite, head of the Highways Agency's National Traffic Control Centre.
“The desire to arrive by a certain time, together with all the expectation that has built up over many months and a long journey ahead, mean the stress factors can be greater. No-one wants a bad start to their summer holiday, so we're encouraging drivers to help themselves to avoid delays where they can."
"Just a few minutes checking the weather and traffic conditions before you set out can take a lot of hassle out of your journey. You should allow plenty of time for your journey and include a rest break every couple of hours.”
[1] The major road network is monitored all year round by the Agency's National Traffic Control Centre (NTCC). Traffic data feeds into a range of information services that drivers can use to get updates on any delays or disruptions ahead, including signs and signals, information screens at motorway service areas, and the website http://www.highways.gov.uk/summer
GATWICK PREPARES FOR BUSY BANK HOLIDAY WEEKEND
With the end of school summer holidays soon approaching, Gatwick is preparing for a busy August bank holiday weekend.
More than half a million passengers will be flying through Gatwick between Thursday (26 August) and Monday (30 August) with Friday being the busiest day with approximately 123,000 passengers.
Stewart Wingate, CEO, Gatwick said, "This year we have delivered excellent levels of customer service particularly in security, as passengers clear our security areas in less than five minutes over 95% of the time - we are committed to ensure this continues this weekend."
The summer sunspots are proving the most popular with Gatwick passengers this bank holiday weekend with travellers flying away to guaranteed sunshine. Dalaman in Turkey, Malaga in Spain, Faro in Portugal, Palma de Mallorca in the Balearics and Alicante in Spain are the top five destinations. Dublin, at number six, is the most popular city-break destination with Corfu at number seven. Orlando, number eight is the favourite long-haul holiday spot. Sharm El Sheikh (number nine) and Ibiza (10) complete the top ten.

WHISKY BARREL FLOORING
This is something you don’t see every day: a floor made out of whisky barrels. The Scotch whisky industry realised it needed an eco-friendly solution to disposing of old barrels, instead of merely consigning them to landfill. Here at McKay Flooring we were happy to play our part.
Having engineered a way to make flat boards out of these beautiful oak barrels – many still with their distinctive branding – we were delighted to receive a major order within a few days to fit a whisky barrel floor in an exclusive bar restaurant fit out.
Many people wonder if the flooring retains the aroma of fine malt whisky. It’s a good question and probably depends on how vivid your imagination is.
Certainly, when you press a board to your nose, you get the very pleasant smell of oak and vanilla. We can’t guarantee a more spiritual, or spirit-rich, experience than that. Come along and try it for yourself.
The new whisky barrel flooring from McKay Flooring has sparked lots of interest with enquiries from whisky-lovers and interior designers from as far afield as the United States, Russia, Japan and Denmark. We are pleased to say our whisky barrel flooring is now available in the McKay Flooring online store. However it is still a good idea to call us on 0845 602 7694 if you are thinking of creating your own unique whisky floor.
While it looks superb in a bar or lounge, the idea of whisky flooring has sparked lots of creative thought amongst whisky enthusiasts. One commenter on a blog suggested it would be great for his den at home and he is sure to be right: imagine a quirky but beautiful oak floor in his private bolthole, where he can relax, smoke a cigar and sip his favourite malt whisky.

DO YOU KNOW YOUR PASTIES FROM YOUR PIES?
No visit to Cornwall is complete without sampling a traditional Cornish pasty. And with many Brits having opted to holiday in the UK this year, many a pasty was sure to be eaten over the summer break. But, how many of us actually know what makes a traditional Cornish pasty, or indeed are aware of its history?
There are many stories and facts about the Cornish pasty, but according to the Cornish Pasty Association, a genuine Cornish pasty must have the following characteristics:
A distinctive 'D' shape and is crimped on one sideThe texture of the filling for the pasty is chunky, made up of uncooked minced or roughly cut chunks of beef , swede or turnip, potato, onion and a light peppery seasoning
The pastry casing is golden in colour, savoury, glazed with milk or egg and robust enough to retain its shape throughout the cooking and cooling process
The whole pasty is slow-baked to ensure that flavours from the raw ingredients are maximised
No flavourings or additives must be used
And most importantly, it must be made in Cornwall
Of course, nothing beats the traditional filling, but there are now dozens of variations widely available. Neil Dookun, operations director at West Cornwall Pasty Co explains: “There’s no escaping the fact that the traditional Cornish pasty is indeed the most popular. However, over the years we have developed some more unusual varieties to suit the tastes and needs of our customers.
“We now offer 20 different pasties, including a number of vegetarian options and quite a few different varieties which are just as popular as the traditional, such as Steak and St Austell Ale, Pork and Apple, Lamb and Mint, Chicken Balti, and Salmon, to name but a few.”
So, it just goes to show that whilst us Brits are fond of heritage and tradition, there is always room for something different. Neil adds: “In fact, we recently asked our Twitter and Facebook followers what their perfect pasty would be, and believe me there were some quite interesting concoctions - from as simple as tuna and onion, to the more unusual chorizo and butternut squash. I suppose anything is possible!”
