NATWEST EVERYWOMAN AWARDS 2010

One month left to enter!

There’s just one month left for the UK’s most inspirational female entrepreneurs to enter the prestigious NatWest everywoman Awards. The awards, a yearly fixture on the business calendar, are open for entries until Friday 30 July.

The NatWest everywoman Awards have been running since 2003 and were established to celebrate women who have started up and run successful businesses – showcasing women who have shown real grit and determination, overcoming obstacles and challenges in order to succeed in business. The judging process is a democratic voting system by an independent panel of judges, themselves highly successful women in business, who determine the most inspirational women in each award category, making the awards a real honour to receive.

The awards categories are inspired by ancient Greek goddesses – Artemis, Demeter, Athena and Hera, who represent courage, determination, perseverance, wisdom and strength respectively, in total synergy with the strength of female entrepreneurs. In addition, one winner will be chosen to receive the NatWest everywoman Award, which celebrates the woman who is thought to have overcome the greatest challenge to achieve business success in 2010. The awards are open to entry to women from all walks of life, running any type of business.

Due to a fantastic reception from the women’s business community over the years, two new awards have been added – the Hestia Award goes to a woman running a rural business and the Gaia Award goes to a woman running an ethical business. Other special awards include the Iris Award, given for the use of innovation in IT and communications in business and the everywoman Ambassador Award, which goes to an iconic women or VIP who acts as an advocate for entrepreneurs. Previous winners include: Elle Macpherson, Colleen Rooney and Chrissie Rucker of The White Company. Lastly, the Spirit of everywoman Award is awarded to a woman who has changed the landscape for women in business, an honour which has been bestowed in previous years to Jenni Murray of Woman’s Hour, Karren Brady, Dame Stella Rimington and Dame Mary Perkins, who is also the Patron of the NatWest everywoman Awards.

This year’s awards are particularly important as we celebrate successful female-run businesses that have weathered the economic downturn as well as highlight the proven fact that women-run businesses in general have faired better in the recession. Research that NatWest and everywoman commissioned found that 50% of women claimed their business had not been impacted by the recession versus 38% of men.*

Karen Gill, MBE, Co-founder and Director of everywoman says; “We’re really excited to be partnering again with NatWest and to announce the addition of two new awards to the programme. Every year we’re overwhelmed with more and more entries of really inspirational stories so it will be a great opportunity to be able to highlight more of these with the new awards Gaia and Hestia. Winning or being shortlisted for an award is really fantastic for these women as it really does propel businesses forwards.”

It’s great free PR and publicity” Judge - Liz Jackson MBE, Great Guns Marketing “The coverage the awards get is huge - it is great free PR and publicity. Becoming a finalist means you’re a winner. Girls are inspired by winners and there should be more female role models in the papers. Even if you don’t win, your profile will be read by people who are promoting women into the public eye.”

If you are thinking about entering, GO FOR IT!” Hera Award winner, 2009 - Lyn Cecil, Secretaries Plus "Winning the NatWest everywoman Award has led to increased business, a daunting appearance on Newsnight with Jeremy Paxman, Alistair Darling and Sir Martin Sorrell and lots of press coverage. In addition, I have had calls asking for help mentoring. I was surprised by how proud friends, colleagues, business contacts and family were by me winning the award.”

Helen Page, Managing Director, Marketing, UK Retail, RBS Group comments "NatWest has been closely involved with everywoman and has been part of the awards since they started eight years ago and we fully believe in the celebration of successful women in business. The awards recognise the extraordinary achievements of women across the UK and this year in particular, we are looking forward to honouring those who have overcome the challenges of the current economic climate and still made their businesses thrive."

The awards are free to enter and applications are made online at: http://www.everywoman.com/natwesteverywomanawards and will be judged by a panel of select businesswomen and entrepreneurs. This will include: Perween Warsi, CBE, MBE, DBA of S&A Foods; Sharon Hilditch, MBE of Crystal Clear International; Liz Jackson, MBE of Great Guns Marketing and Jo Hansford, the eponymous hairdresser, amongst others.

The winners will be announced at a ceremony held on 1st December 2010 at The Dorchester in London with influential businesswomen, politicians, media and VIPS who will celebrate their achievement.

For further information and details on how to enter please go to www.everywoman.com/natwesteverywomanawards and for table bookings, please contact everywoman directly on 0870 746 1800.

PASTY RETAILER SERVES UP A CORNISH SUMMER TREAT
Fish and chips, rhubarb and custard, cheese and crackers, bacon and eggs – all popular food combinations which are loved by the nation. But let’s face it, none are as quintessentially English, or as delectable, as strawberries and cream.

Renowned for being served up during Wimbledon, strawberries could be described as the mainstay of the English summer, especially when topped with lashings of cream, for that extra indulgent touch.

To celebrate the summer season, local pasty retailer West Cornwall Pasty Co is serving its own mouth-watering take on strawberries and cream, with its traditional Cream Tea.

West Cornwall Pasty Co’s Cream Tea is served with a warm scone, delicious Boddingtons Berries strawberry conserve and Rodda’s Cornish clotted cream, nicely rounded off with a generous pot of Fairtrade tea.

Chief executive Richard Nieto said: “We have taken great care to select the very finest ingredients to make our Cream Tea, and we’re proud that our scones, jam and cream are all sourced from Cornwall. So, we recommend that you enjoy your cream tea the traditional Cornish way – by spreading the jam on the scone first, and then adding a large spoon of the clotted cream on top. This is what makes a Cornish Cream Tea different to a Devonshire one, where the jam is placed on top of the cream.”

Traditionally, Cream Tea is served between lunch and dinner, as a mid-afternoon snack. However, West Cornwall Pasty Co’s Cream Tea is served throughout the day at 38 of its shops across the UK. Furnished with authentic Cornish memorabilia and featuring murals depicting coastal life – what better setting could there be to sit back and enjoy this sumptuous treat?

The Cream Tea is priced at £3.50.

LAST WEEK TO GET CAKING FOR CHANCE TO BE BRITAIN’S BEST AMATEUR BAKER
Only six days left to enter Red Letter Days national baking competition

22 June 2010: Cake makers across Britain, if you want to be named the best baker in the land, now is the time get out the rolling pin, throw on that apron and dust off the icing piper as there are only six days left to enter the Red Letter Days national baking competition.

To celebrate its 21st anniversary, the experiences company has asked the British public to submit a birthday cake for the chance to be crowned Britain’s best amateur baker. The competition closes this Sunday (27th June), when all the entries need to be submitted as photos or videos to http://social.redletterdays.co.uk/.

The Red Letter Days national baking competition is open to those ages 12 and up, there is no restriction on size, shape, colour or recipe, and with entries already received including cakes shaped as a castle, a pair of Wellingtons, Red Letter Days experiences and even a Star Wars R2D2 - the competition is set to fire the imagination of any discerning cake lover.

The contest will culminate in a birthday cake-off in London between eight finalists on July 5th to be judged by celebrity Master Pâtissier (creator of Madonna’s wedding cake!) and star of TV’s Glamour Puds, Eric Lanlard.

As well the honour of being name Britain’s Best Amateur Baker, the winner will also receive an all expenses paid trip for two to Sri Lanka from Advantage Luxury Specialist. The other finalists will also be in to take home a cake making master class with Eric Lanlard and £1000 worth of Red Letter Days vouchers.

“WE’RE VERY YOU”. A NEW ADVERTISING CAMPAIGN FOR RADISSON EDWARDIAN HOTELS
A new advertising campaign for Radisson Edwardian Hotels http://www.radissonedwardian.com/ celebrates both the individuality of the group’s twelve London and Manchester city centre hotels and the huge number of regulars who return time after time for a highly personalised service where they feel really cared for.

The campaign takes the form of portraits of ten of these “regulars” created by up and coming artists.

“We’ve turned the normal “endorsement” campaign on its head,” says Linda Plant http://www.radissonedwardian.com/ the hotel group’s Marketing Director. “The campaign is less about photographs of our interiors but rather focuses on our guests, demonstrating that we specialise in really knowing them.

“Our staff are trained to take a very individual approach to each hotel guest –whether it’s their first, or their fiftieth stay with us. “We’re Very You” is not so much an advertising slogan, as part of our DNA. It might be as simple as knowing which paper a guest prefers and what kind of breakfast – or perhaps knowing that someone is keen on a particular type of theatre and making suggestions for an evening out. In a market place which can sometimes feel cold and impersonal, this individualised approach proves to be a popular recipe - as corroborated by the high number of repeat visits.”

Radisson Edwardian has been a long-standing supporter of the arts, reflected in the commissioning of raw and emerging talent to create the series. Fine art portraiture was chosen as the medium due to its ability to “invoke emotions and nuances of personality“ says Plant. “A dash of colour, or a texturised brush stroke, can create a sense of the true individual, which photography simply cannot quite capture.”

“We are humbled that so many of our guests were prepared to spend a lot of time and effort working with us to produce these portraits,” said Ms Plant. “We really hope they enjoy the evening.”

THE ‘MAN DRAWER’ RECYCLING CHALLENGE FROM RECYCLE-MORE.CO.UK

recycle-more.co.uk (a Valpak Ltd initiative) is challenging you to clean out your 'man drawer', and get recycling for Recycle Week.
Over the next few weeks recycle-more will be taking you through all the items commonly found in the ‘man drawer’ starting with electrical items, which is the focus of Recycle Week 2010 (June 21-27).

The ‘man drawer’ lives in homes all around the world, where broken watches, the odd screwdriver, fuses, mp3 players, old memory sticks and electrical leads lie unused and are just some of the items that can be recycled.

Samantha Blades who heads up recycle-more at Valpak commented:

“The recycle-more website is a great resource to find out what and where you can recycle those miscellaneous items hidden away in drawers and lofts.

It’s amazing that our electrical items can now be recycled so easily in the UK, from old memory sticks to broken hair straighteners. It’s also important we don't forget about those old batteries http://recycle-more.co.uk/nav/page2410.aspx, there is now a massive network of recycling points for batteries across the country.

Each year we throw away about 600 million batteries. Laid end to end these batteries would reach from the UK to Australia and back again, clearing out the ‘man drawer’ could go a long way to recycling some of these.”

All of the items mentioned here could be recycled, reducing the amount of e-waste being sent to landfill sites and in turn helping to decrease toxic substances damaging our environment.

You can find out where to recycle a wide range of items including batteries and electrical items by using the recycle-more bank locator. Just type in your postcode and the item you want to recycle for a list and map of your nearest recycling facilities. http://www.recycle-%20more.co.uk/banklocator/banklocator.aspx

Keep visiting http://www.recycle-more.co.uk to follow our ‘man drawer’ clear out challenge.

JEREMY SCOTT BRINGS HIS UNIQUE STYLE TO THE ICONIC TANQUERAY NO. TEN BOTTLE

This spring sees Jeremy Scott, the most renowned and boldest of American designers, redress the elegant and iconic bottle of TANQUERAY NO. TEN gin for the UK.

Known for his bold designs and unbridled creativity, Scott has infused the classic world of TANQUERAY NO. TEN with his own electric vision, producing a captivating design for the new limited-edition packaging that will now encase the signature green bottle of the luxury gin.

Scott’s sleek, geometric black casing, has been designed to perfectly clothe the angled design of the TANQUERAY NO. TEN bottle, reinforcing the air of sophistication that surrounds the spirit itself. However, the box opens to reveal a jazzy and extravagant print of olives and cocktail glasses, representing the glamour of the martini cocktail, but with an infusion of Scott’s own signature style.

“The smooth and fresh taste of TANQUERAY NO. TEN gin makes the perfect martini cocktail” says Scott. “The classic exterior of my black casing echoes the stylish image of the cocktail, as well as the sophisticated edge that TANQUERAY NO. TEN has as a spirit. Yet in the different shapes and bright colours on the inside of the case, I wanted to reflect the explosion of tastes that you get when you sip a good gin martini cocktail for the first time – especially one that is made with the fresh fruits and botanicals of TANQUERAY NO. TEN.”

Having dressed stars such as Kylie Minogue, Beyonce, Gwen Stefani and Madonna, Scott brings an edgy twist to a classic bottle - a combination that is destined to become the collector’s item of the season. The Jeremy Scott TANQUERAY NO.TEN pack will be exclusively available at Harvey Nichols wine shops nationwide from June, retailing from £32.50
