ORANGE AND VINTAGE CLASSICS LAUNCH THE ORANGE INHERITANCE COLLECTION
Orange, in partnership with Vintage Classics, today announced the six books that will form the Orange Inheritance collection.
Created to celebrate the 16th anniversary of the Orange Prize for Fiction, six Orange Prize winners have selected the books they would pass onto the next generation. The six titles will be available in paperback from 7 April 2011 priced between £5.99 and £9.99 each and eBooks from the Orange Book Club at orange.co.uk/bookclub.
Beautifully designed in the distinctive Vintage Classics style, the six books and eBooks will include introductions from the Orange Prize for Fiction winners explaining why their choice is relevant to the next generation.
The Orange Inheritance collection is:
· To the Lighthouse by Virginia Woolf selected by Helen Dunmore, Orange Prize winner in 1996
· Tess of the D’Urbervilles by Thomas Hardy selected by Anne Michaels, Orange Prize winner in 1997
· Life and Fate by Vasily Grossman chosen by Linda Grant, winner of the Orange Prize in 2000
· So Long, See You Tomorrow by William Maxwell selected by Ann Patchett, Orange Prize winner in 2002
· Revolutionary Road by Richard Yates selected by Lionel Shriver, Orange Prize winner in 2005
· Eugénie Grandet by Honoré de Balzac selected by Rose Tremain, Orange Prize winner in 2008
Kate Mosse, Co-Founder & Honorary Director of the Orange Prize for Fiction, commented: “This wonderful collection reminds us of two things. First, how classics become classics – the books we fall in love with when we are young, the books we inherit or come to be recommended by friends and family, the novels that influence us. But also of the relationship between leading contemporary writers and the authors in whose footsteps we tread.”
She continues “It’s particularly fitting to celebrate the 16th anniversary of the Orange Prize with the launch of a collection designed to excite, engage and enthral the next generation of readers but most of all, with a range of fantastic books that remain as relevant today as they were in the year they were first published.”
Laura Hassan, Editorial Director of Vintage Classics, commented: “It’s wonderful to see what the winners of the Orange Prize for Fiction would pass on to the next generation. Their choices are as varied, surprising and controversial as you would expect from such a stellar group of writers.”
To mark the launch of the Orange Inheritance collection, Orange and Vintage Classics asked 100 men and women including authors, celebrities, broadcasters, writers and a range of previous and current Orange Prize Chairs, judges and patrons, to select the book they would choose to pass on to the next generation and explain what makes it their ‘inheritance classic’.
Amongst those who submitted choices were Mark Haddon, Rachel Johnson, Alan Titchmarsh, Emma Freud, Colin Murray, Fiona Phillips, Bear Grylls, Susanna Reid, Irvine Welsh, Michael Morpurgo, Joanne Harris, Jung Chang, Louis de Bernières, Martha Lane Fox and Will Self.
The Orange Inheritance collection will be available nationwide from April 7th and available to download on the Orange Book Club at www.orange.co.uk/bookclub
Lionel Shriver, Kate Mosse and Mark Haddon will be speaking about their 'Inheritance Classics' at the Vintage Classics Day at Foyles, Charing Cross Road, London on Saturday 7 May. The fantastic line-up of speakers includes Jake Arnott, Sadie Jones, Sebastian Peake (Mervyn Peake’s son), Rose Tremain and Sebastian Faulks.
There are limited early bird tickets available for the Vintage Classics Day only until Tuesday 5 April. These tickets are priced at £12 (full price £18/£15 concs).

TALENTED LONDON UNDERGROUND BUSKERS TO PERFORM AT ANDAZ HOTEL
The Andaz Liverpool Street hotel has teamed up with Transport for London to offer its customers ‘Music from the Underground’ at the Catch Champagne Bar from the evening of 13th April.
Buskers who usually perform at Tube stations have been invited to submit a short video demo for a chance to take part in ‘Music from the Underground’ which is a collaboration between the hotel and the popular London Underground licensed busking scheme.
From 5.30pm to 10.30pm on Wednesdays, throughout April and May, two selected London Underground licensed buskers will perform at the bar. The gigs will be open to the public and are free of charge but the buskers will be paid, and in the spirit of busking, the audience will be encouraged to leave a tip if they wish. They’ll also be able to purchase CD’s if available.
Arnaud de Saint-Exupéry, Andaz Liverpool Street General Manager, commented: “We are so excited about this collaboration – we really believe in it and it is reflective of Andaz Liverpool Street’s ethos to support our local community and culture. The nature of the Underground means people can’t stop for more than a few moments so ‘Music from the Underground’ is providing a rare platform on which London’s world-renowned buskers can showcase their talent to a wider, stationary audience.”
Videos of the shortlisted musicians can be viewed from today on www.youtube.com/andazliverpoolstreet
The public is invited to vote online for their favourite musicians to help select the participants who will perform in a series of events at the hotel.
Glenn Reffin, Revenue Development Manager for London Underground, said: “More than three and a half million customers use the Tube a day, allowing many of them to experience live performances by talented buskers from LU’s licensed busking scheme.”
The first evening of performances will be held on Wednesday 13th April (5.30pm to 10.30pm) at Catch Champagne Bar at Andaz Liverpool Street, 40 Liverpool Street EC2M 7QN. www.andaz.com
London Underground buskers are chosen on talent and many have played at high profile events such as Glastonbury and concerts at the Albert Hall. This year’s Rhythm of London Busking Underground competition – a collaboration between the Mayor of London with London Underground which encourages young musicians to compete for a year’s busking license – is now underway. In 2009 Jamie West scooped the first prize and last year Noemie Ducimetiere was named young busker of the year.
In January this year classical music buskers played on the London Underground as a part of BBC Radio 3's Genius of Mozart season.
THE ZETTER TOWNHOUSE
Opening April 2011
When The Zetter opened in Clerkenwell in April 2004 it bought stylish hotel living and a buzzing restaurant and bar to the heart of this fashionable London district. Now seven years on, Mark Sainsbury and Michael Benyan are working their magic again, with The Zetter Townhouse.
The Zetter Townhouse is located just across the square from its cousin. This Georgian townhouse is best described as though it were the home of The Zetter’s eccentric 18th century ancestors, full of designer objects and eclectic art scattered throughout from their travels abroad.
Designer Russell Sage has hunted high and low to collect peculiar and enchanted treasures to create a Townhouse that is quintessentially English, theatrical and a little eccentric.
Tony Conigliario, who is widely acknowledged as one of the UK’s pioneering drinks creators, is continually working to break the boundaries surrounding drinking experiences. He will be creating a fabulous destination bar, where guests are invited to explore the magic and mystery of cocktails in his apothecary like bar.
Bar food will be by Bruno Loubet, from Bistro Bruno across the Square at The Zetter. The menu will include charcuterie, pates and more. This will be the second time Tony and Bruno have worked together – Tony ran the bar at Isola when Bruno was in charge there back in 2001. Afternoon Tea will be very special too - with a collaboration with Henrietta Lovell from The Rare Tea Company, and of course some exciting new Afternoon Tea Cocktails.
With just eleven rooms and two suites, The Zetter Townhouse is the ideal place to escape from reality, a fascinating London hideaway. With a basement games room and private dining, guests can book the entire Townhouse or hole up in one of their beautifully appointed rooms for the perfect escape. www.thezetter.com Rooms from £185 ex VAT

LOSE YOURSELF IN THE LAUGHARNE WEEKEND 2011
- LITERATURE, MUSIC, POETRY AND CULTURAL CAPERS IN THE BELOVED TOWN OF DYLAN THOMAS -
In its fifth year and spanning three days from April 15-17, The Laugharne Weekend, in Carmarthenshire, south west Wales, is a lesser known but more raucous answer to Hay. Refreshingly low-key and unstarry festival-goers can expect to find themselves rubbing shoulders with literati and musical legends at this locally focused yet edgy weekend of the arts.
Laugharne was once dubbed by literary legend Dylan Thomas, its most famous resident, as a "timeless, mild, beguiling island of a town", and he even based one of his most famous works ‘Under Milk Wood’ here. The town’s literature roots don’t stop there either, Frankenstein author Mary Shelley spent a considerable amount of time in the town, Kingsley Amis reportedly wrote Booker Prize winning ‘The Old Devils’ whilst staying in Laugharne and Margaret Atwood set ‘The Grave of the Famous Poet’ here.
Highlights of this year’s festival line-up include:
