The Design Museum’s mission is to ‘celebrate, entertain and inform’ and these little books do exactly that. They present wonderful snapshots in time and are beautifully presented, what we loved is the blend of history and fashion and social commentary; so in Fifty Dresses that changed the World you see Yves Saint Laurent Mondrian Dress of 1965, as well as the famous Elizabeth Hurley Safety Pin Dress, and both Diana, Princess of Wales Wedding Dress and the equally famous black pleated chiffon dress she wore to a Vanity Fair dinner the night of the television interview with Prince Charles.
In Fifty Shoes That Changed the World there is a fascinating insight into the origin of the influences of some of today’s high fashion. Carmen Miranda’s platform shoes of 1938, Biba’s platform shoes of 1972 and the equally famous Vivienne Westwood shoes worn by Naomi Campbell when she slipped and fell on the catwalk. From Dorothy’s Ruby Slippers to the Jimmy Choo lilac-suede feather-trimmed shoe lost by Carrie Bradshaw in Sex and the City, there are wonderful and iconic examples of shoe design. Both books are delightful slices of history, perfect as Christmas presents, or as a special gift to yourself. Fabulous weekend reading!
