Look after YourselfIt’s that time of year again, when before the autumn, we try to grasp the last rays of summer sun. This August, like many previous Augusts, hasn’t started well, the promise of continuous sun is still elusive, so if you are waiting for the sun to break through now could be a great time to start thinking about looking after yourself more. New Year Resolutions often don’t work in the darkness of January, but September is a great time to start a rejuvenation plan to take you through the winter and into the spring, when if it is like this year we will have our summer again!

Becoming the person you have always wanted to be

The important thing is to make a start; inertia, apathy and even slothfulness are all the enemies of us achieving our goals. Many self-motivation books encourage you to overcome these enemies through positive visualisation, but it is all too easy to start with good intentions and then to slip back. Here are some ways to overcome this.

Summer is a great time to start exploring your options- lying on the beach, even taking time off from work and being at home can give you a chance to think differently. If you are thinking about a new career, or achieving an ambition, gather together a collection of old magazines, glue and scissors and a large piece of paper, and choose a time when you are relaxed without any pressures. The secret is to encourage your mind to wander, just go through the magazines selecting the words and images as they appeal. At first just cut out the images, but do not attempt to put them in any order at first. Take your time; let your thoughts take their own path. When you have gathered enough start laying them on the card, see if you can also find appropriate words, look for positive, upbeat words or statements. Don’t stick them down until you feel that you have started to create a ‘mood’ and you are happy with their positioning.

Really let your creativity flow, imagine what your life would be like if you achieved your ambition, its not necessarily about money, its more about what you might like to do on a day to day basis. If you thinking about a change of career, think about the role, imagine yourself in that role, what would you wear, what would you do, imagine a documentary team following you around, what would they see. Describe a typical day. Think about people that you know who are in this role, what do they do, what does success mean for them?

The mood board technique can be used to explore anything that you want to achieve, creating visual images can be a powerful reinforcement of what is possible. It doesn’t have to be just about your career, it can be something to do with where you live, or an ambition to achieve something like running a marathon.

When you have finished put it somewhere as a positive daily reminder you of what you want to do. You could also take a picture of it in your mobile phone, to encourage you to keep focusing on what you want to achieve. To take this a stage further Ron G Holland in The Eureka Enigma! emphasises the importance when thinking about what you want, of ‘internalizing it in your imagination’, using your senses, ‘ using all your emotions and elevate them to the highest pitch you can muster’ …. ‘The more visual and auditory detail and the more emotion you insert into your biocomputer programs the more neuronal pathways you create by visualizing your goals over and over again you allow the biocomputer to start functioning at that level-to come up with ideas to help you attain your worldly desires’

Be inspired by what you see, and focus each day on doing something however little, that helps you work towards achieving that goal. Each week do something specific that is part of your overall SMART plan, timetable it in, and devote enough time to actually achieving something substantial, that can be ticked off an action plan. Plan it Sunday night, celebrate its achievement on Friday night.

If you are lost for inspiration do something else!
Sometimes we make our lives too hard. We try to be creative when we are too tired, we keep going on a task kidding ourselves we will take a break when we have finished, only to find the day has ended. We stare at a blank screen, or a piece of paper hoping for inspiration, when in reality inspiration often comes when we least expect it, so if you are finding it hard to focus, go for a walk, feed the ducks, go running, swimming, play with your children. Even when doing mundane chores the solution to problems will often pop into your mind. Make your new motto for the Autumn - Take a break!

Socialise with others, taking time out, relaxing with people we like, or love can make us feel better about ourselves, caring for others, doing something for someone else, laughing, smiling, being happy are great energisers. Find support, network with others, there are numerous groups both online and offline where people can share ideas and be inspired by others. Join a library, read the biographies of other people who have achieved their goals. Use as much support and help that you need-see it as a positive investment.

If you are worried about something, do get help, there are many professional organisations set up to offer free advice about personal difficulties, debt, or marital issues, if you are depressed or worried it is all to easy to remain paralysed, like a rabbit in headlights seemingly unable to move forward. By taking the first step towards solving some of the issues it is enough to motivate you again.

Recognise your highs and lows during the week, identify when you feel at your best and when you are less energetic. Plan your actions around the times when you feel most motivated. Identify when you are at your best during the day to do your most important or creative work. Use this knowledge to plan the best time to work on your action plan.

Use pockets of dead time more productively, we waste hours of our lives being unproductive. Focused, motivated people multi-task, they use time productively, invest in a small notebook, either electronic, or paper and use spare moments to work on your own action plans, when travelling, waiting for meetings to start. All the most creative people have ideas books, to capture those fleeting moments of brilliance!

Relax ! Cultivate opportunities to take time just for you, build in little treats during your day. Life is hard enough for most people, take a moment to indulge in something you really enjoy doing, reading a magazine, browsing the web, making a telephone call, talking to a friend. In Learn to Relax, a wonderfully gentle book by Mike George, full of 25 illustrated step-by-step exercises, he suggests ‘We all have a choice. We can live life in the “fast lane” pushing ourselves from one experience to the next, until one day we can push ourselves no more, or we can turn off the superhighway to follow quieter, slower roads that encourage our driving skills, rather than our driving speed. Ultimately, we may reach the same destination. However, the different routes by which we travel there will determine the state of our mind and body on arrival.’

When you are feeling stressed it is sometimes hard to stop and take time out
, but just as taking a short nap can really recharge your batteries, so can taking a break and doing something you really enjoy. Music can have a powerful effect on our moods, so have a favourite collection on your iPod®, computer, or in your collection at home, and use it to re-energise you, relax, or inspire you.

Help organise others to make your life easier.
Distinguish between urgent and important. Don’t be afraid to say “No” but do it with good grace. Empty your mind at the end of each day. Create “To Do” lists and gain satisfaction from ticking things off the list. Start each day feeling positive, and try and do something good for someone else too.

One of the most powerful time-management techniques is recognising the importance of trying to achieve a work/life balance, and making every effort to organise your time (and others) in order to achieve it. Just because other people waste their time, it doesn’t mean that you have to be sucked into the same pattern.

By creating the illusion that you do not have time to waste can often mean that others are more respectful of your time, its not about being rude, but is about being focused and helping others to be the same way. Internal meetings can drift on for hours, but encouraging people to arrive on time, focus on the task in hand and then leave promptly is a good discipline for everyone.

Twenty Minutes to make a difference, if you feel you are drowning in a sea of action lists, there is a way to fight your way through them, Structure part of your day around twenty minutes slots, some may take less time which is a bonus, some you may decide once you are in them that you need longer which is also fine, this is not a hard and fast rule, but it is a discipline that can work to help you deal with unpleasant tasks, it also means that you may get some things done more quickly as you speed up to meet the twenty minute deadline.

Here are some ideas, photocopying, shredding, filing, sorting out your desk drawer, clearing your desk at the end of the day, writing up notes from a meeting, cleaning the bathroom, kitchen, general tidying, vacuuming etc. These are all tasks that we may not enjoy doing, but by setting a time limit, they become manageable. Equally find ways of sharing these tasks with others either in the office, or at home.

As well as chores there are other more enjoyable, or healthy tasks that we should build into our day. Walking around the office, to the shop; if you use a pedometer you will be surprised how many steps you can walk in twenty minutes, particularly if you do it at regular intervals during the day. Or take a twenty minute cat nap. Metronaps report on their site http://www.metronaps.co.uk/ that a brief nap of 15-20 minutes can enhance energy for up to 8 hours, improve productivity of 34% and alertness by 100%. Or build in exercise, exercising for twenty minutes, even allowing five minutes for warm-up and five minutes for cool down you can still achieve a good ten minute workout.

Eat the right foods, there are many excellent cookery books on the market, many of which we have reviewed in our Cookery Books reviews, but a very helpful book to eating the right food is 101 Foods that Could Save Your Life by David Grotto, each of the 101 includes a history of the food’s origin, therapeutic benefits, tips for use and preparation and an appetizing recipe from a leading chef, or nutritionist.

Get physically fit, take the right exercise, our minds work better when we feed them correctly, we have more energy to do things when we are physically fit and looking good helps our self esteem. Build good habits into your overall action plan. Find time each day to get fresh air, ideally with some exercise. We loved Joey Bull’s Ballet Workout and her latest DVD, Body Reshape Plan is equally inspiring. Joey’s style of presenting is well paced, reassuring and practical and there are some great ways of toning up based on your body shape.

Here are some more ideas from Joey, who is also a 4 x UK Fitness Champion and top international trainer.

“Ten Tips for Shaping up and Cleaning Out!

Eat regularly – Every 3 hours. Doing this keeps the blood sugar levels stable so reduces cravings and the release of insulin than can be laid down as fat.

Check your portions – Join your hands together, this is a good sample size for your main meals, in between snacks would be a one hand portion

Protein – This should feature in every meal and snack, it also helps stabilise the blood sugar levels and you won’t be as hungry. Broaden your protein choices: Lentils, chick peas, seeds, nuts, tofu, fish and eggs are good alternatives to the heavier meat proteins.

Avoid all processed foods. These are hard for the body to digest and so creates bloating and an incorrect chemical balance in the cells. This will slow down you mobilising stubborn fat! Buy foods that are in their natural state – if you don’t understand the ingredients, don’t buy it!

Energy foods – choose lots of vegetables and fruit to fuel yourself. Potatoes, rice and grains aren’t unhealthy but they can make you feel sluggish so keep them low in your eating habits.

Drink Water – 1.5 litres or 2 litres depending on your activity levels. Keep caffeine drinks to an absolute minimum. These play havoc with your adrenal system and therefore blood sugar levels.

Think healthy!
People who eat for health are more likely to attain and retain their perfect weight. Those who eat to be skinny tend to have on-going weight problems.

Make your exercise time something to look forward to
. Find an environment that fires you up positively – maybe that’s at home with some good music on, in the park with nature and your dog or at the gym… and just get moving!

Think little and often to keep long term commitment and momentum to your workouts. Bursts of 15 minutes can deliver great results if you fill each moment with exercises that are appropriate to your lifestyle and goals.

A perfect mini workout for both time and satisfaction would be to alternate resistant exercises or weights with some ‘explosive’ moves. Say press ups followed by jack jumps, then crunches followed by squat jumps… Make up 8 exercises, move quickly through them and then repeat! Short and sweet but you metabolism will remain high throughout the day

Watching what you put into your body plays a huge part in your health and condition, but package that with exercise and you’ll be a new you and enjoy a new shape…”

Look after your health
When we are busy its very easy to forget the importance of health checks, there are regular checks offered on the NHS, which could have a critical role in spotting symptoms before they become too advanced. Free screening for certain types of cancer is available on the NHS for some people. There are a number of national screening programmes available. They save thousands of lives a year and improve the quality of life for those affected.

The NHS has also started rolling out health checks. Everyone is at risk of developing heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes or kidney disease. But these diseases can often be prevented, and NHS Health Check can help you by assessing your risk and giving you personalised advice on how to reduce it The new NHS Health Check is for adults in England between the ages of 40 and 74. In this guide you can learn more about what the check is, what it involves, and when and how you can get it. There is information that will help you to understand more about your results when you receive them, and what to do next. Take charge of your long-term health, with NHS Health Check.

One thing that is very easy to neglect are our eyes, as we grow older our eyes change and if you were short-sighted when you were younger you may find this improving, but your ability to read paperwork may deteriorate. More than anything an eye-test can detect much more than just your eyesight. The RNIB (Royal National Institute of Blind People) recommends that you have your eyes examined by an optometrist (optician) every two years - even if there is no change in your vision. Sometimes an eye condition may be developing even though your vision is not affected. Some people may be at higher risk of eye diseases like glaucoma and diabetic eye disease. Extra tests ensure early detection.

High Blood Pressure – Could YOU be the 1 in 3?

High blood pressure is the main risk factor for stroke and heart, but it’s a symptomless condition so the only way to find out what your blood pressure is to have regular checks. Keep a record yourself and remember the numbers in the same way as your height and weight. In other words, Know your Numbers! - and encourage your family and friends to do the same.

Almost 1,500 venues, known as Pressure Stations, offer free blood pressure checks during the Blood Pressure Association's award-winning Know your Numbers! Week, held in the second week of September each year.

This year the Blood Pressure Association is asking 'Could YOU be the 1 in 3?' as one in three adults in the UK has high blood pressure - that's 16 million people nationwide.

Along with your free blood pressure check, you will receive advice on next steps, a leaflet explaining what the numbers mean and a handy record card to take away with you.

Pressure Stations are located throughout the UK including pharmacies, workplaces, GP surgeries, hospitals, health clubs, leisure centres, shopping centres, supermarkets and other community venues.

Know your Numbers! Week 2009 takes place 7-13 September. To find your nearest ‘Pressure Station’ visit www.bpassoc.org.uk/kyn and type in your postcode or town.

In the meantime, you can get a free blood pressure check all year-round at GP Surgeries, health centres and many high street pharmacies.

If you'd like more information about high blood pressure please visit the Blood Pressure Association's website www.bpassoc.org.uk or call its Information Line on 0845 241 0989 (Mon-Fri, 11am-3pm)

Becoming wise, learning from life
It has long been known that knowledge equals power, but more than that, knowledge can help you perform more effectively, but it is not just any knowledge, many of us listened diligently in school, only to walk out at the end of our school years and never use some of that knowledge again unless it is in a question in a quiz ! Gaining wisdom is quite different, wisdom is knowledge, plus experience, and application. In One for the Road, Travelling America in Pursuit of Happiness Janelle McCulloch describes a road trip to America as a Happiness Odyssey. As more and more people are attracted to taking an older gap year this is a poignant and thought provoking account of one woman’s pursuit of happiness.

As we go through life we learn through our different experiences, every experience, good, or bad has a value, but only if we learn the lessons of that experience. Keep an open mind, be open to new experiences, go to bed excited about what tomorrow may bring.

Think younger!
One of our favourite books at the moment is You can be as Young as You Think by Tim Drake and Chris Middleton. As they say ‘ Ageing is in the mind. If you think youthful thoughts you can remain young-and rejuvenate. Think younger and you will become more alert mentally. More importantly you will genuinely act younger. By both thinking and acting younger, you will lead a wiser, more rewarding and fulfilled life.’

For a price much cheaper than a rejuvenating face cream you can learn how you can develop a ‘Young Brain’ and the exciting thing is you are never too old to start!

Celebrate Success! While you are planning and working towards your ambition, don’t forget to live in the here and now and celebrate the successes you achieve along the way. Most people have heard the Latin phrase “Carpe Diem” meaning “sieze the day” but how many of us really do use each day to the best advantage? If you really want to change your life, a good place to start is valuing what you have already achieved and building on this to achieve your ultimate goal. That way you celebrate life’s little successes as they come and build a more positive mindset to help you achieve you bigger goals.

Synopsis: Do you have an ‘old’ brain or a ‘young’ brain?

Think carefully, because how you answer this important question could be one of the most significant predictors of how well you’ll live the rest of your life.

In this fast-moving, fast-changing world, it is important that we remain vital, relevant and useful. Growing old gracefully, where physically and mentally we quietly fade into obscurity, is no longer an option and the expectation that we will stay younger for longer has never been greater.

A ‘young’ brain is the antidote to ageing and You Can Be As Young As You Think shows you exactly you how you can get one.

Through six easy-to-follow and life-changing steps, you’ll find out that ageing is all in the mind and discover how, by developing a younger brain, you can live a more fulfilled, rewarding, successful and happy life.

The benefits of living your life with a ‘young’ brain are vast. In your personal life you’ll have more fun, be more adventurous and be more excited. You’ll laugh more, get on better with your family and strangers will more easily become friends. You’ll be more interested and interesting, embrace new technology and feel better connected to popular culture and the modern world.

In your professional life you’ll be more creative, more responsive, and better at managing change. You’ll be recognised as someone who’s fresh, vital, full of bright ideas and always thinking one step ahead. You’ll be more dynamic, more confident, more ambitious, a better team player and stand out as an innovator who’s more willing to take risks.

Whilst many of us are agonising over the outward signs of ageing, it seems we are completely ignoring the insidious, gradual decline into tired, outdated and old thinking that until now might have been seen as an inevitable part of getting older.

Well, it doesn’t have to be that way and You Can Be as Young as You Think offers a scientifically sound blueprint for successful anti-ageing. It’s a unique opportunity to rediscover freedom - the freedom to be open, to be flexible, to be exuberant.

The book contains an enlightening Brain Age Calculator which will examine your thinking and reveal the true age of your brain, often with surprising, and very thought-provoking results!

Then the authors will take you step-by-step through the principles behind their Six Wisdoms of Youth and coach you in systematically training your brain to think and feel young.

The great thing too is that it doesn’t matter how old you are now for this exciting programme to revolutionise your life. If you’re young then this book will stop you from ever developing those mental cobwebs that will slow you down and clog up your brain. If you’re middle-aged and worrying you’re already becoming out of touch, the book will quickly stop the rot and help you rediscover the younger you. And if you’re older and maybe wish you weren’t, this book will help you rejuvenate, revitalise and reignite your mind so you can live out your years with exuberance, excitement and youthful vigour.

So, if you want a future in which you can really believe, and in which you can play an active and interested part; if you want a life that’s fun, stimulating and interesting, where every day offers a new challenge, new adventure and new experience; if you want to hold on to your curiosity, your spontaneity and your youthful vigour; if you want to feel younger and look younger for longer. It’s all possible. Growing old really is all in the mind, you can be as you young as you want to be, you can be as young as you think.

Body Reshape PlanBody Reshape Plan Joey Bull
Synopsis: Welcome to the Body Reshape Plan!

This is about how to get the best out of your body shape. We're all different shapes so to optimise your shape it is about putting 'balance' into your figure.
